    Hi,
Just thinking overnight about a 05 car I looked at yesterday. The NCT was just done, but runs out 1/13. Is that something I should be concerned about? I've added a mechanic to look at it for me today. It's a private sale.

No. the car was due its first nct in 2009 and then again in 2011. the nct for 2011 expires in 01/13. so if the car was put through the nct any time after 2011 it will expire in 2013.

Ask yourself why the car has had no nct for over 18months. If its a private sale why would it not be nct'd for that length? Was it laid up, did the owner pass away, was it flood damaged and then repaired, was the owner just too lazy to test it? What do these questions say about the owner and how it has been maintained?

Off in a while to look at it again. I'm a bit apprehensive now.

if its due in january 2013, then it can be tested again this month (3 months early on a cars second and subsequent tests) so i'd be asking him to get it tested for you, should be easy enough arrange a test date, not long waiting lists this time of year. then you will have a test until january 2015!!

There must be a million Ford Focus out there for sale, if this one doesn't feel right then move on to the next one.

I'm not looking for a focus?

If mechanic OKs it, I'll do add NCT tester suggests and ask for a fresh two year test.

Everyone is saying that there is millions of cars on secondhand market, but in reality if you want to find something reasonable, it's pretty hard.
Everyone are describing their cars as mint in perfect condition, but when you get there to see the car, is shows up as piece of rubbish.

I remember last year I was looking for mazda 6, so it took me few days and nearly 2000km driving aroun looking for different ones, until I found a reasonable example (but it still wasn't perfect).

I have been looking at cars under the 3k mark lately, and there is a lot of rubbish out there, I would say 90% of what I seen and I asked hard questions before I went to see them, all lies:(

Had mechanic check her out, brought her for a spin, up on lift etc couple of niggly things but he was happy all things considered so I bought her.

    Thanks for the replies.

Who knows why it wasn't tested, it's worth asking but a guess may be as trustworthy as any answer you may get.
The fact is however that it has just been tested and as flawed as the NCT is, a recent test is a much better indicator of the current condition of the car than one done 18 months ago, even if the expiry is the same. I don't quite get all the negative commentary.
