Buying up north

I'm thinking of buying a van up the north and was wondering what to watch out for, pros and cons.

I'll be buying from a dealership but I'm slightly concerned about spending about 8k in another jurisdiction regarding warranty and generally the purchasing process. Also, what would be the best method of payment?

Don't pay cash, whatever you do! Pay by (sterling) bank draft if possible. Is there a FSH with the vehicle??

I would also check out the van's history via HPI. Get an AA/RAC check as well.

Yeah, van comes with a FSH and I plan on doing RAC check. BTW, will that give me a mileage reading from previous DOE?

I wasn't going to pay cash, it was either a draft or a card but would there not be a delay in the draft clearing before I could get the vehicle?

There is no DOE test in the UK for commercial vehicles. I'm not sure if light commercials are just subject to an NCT after 4 years like cars, or whether there is a seperate test, but I don't think it's on an annual basis like it is in ROI.

Is it cheaper up north than the equivalent van here? With nominal VRT on commercials they are actually cheaper here new than they are in the UK. Not sure on used prices, plus there is a bit of a shortage of second hand vans here because very few were sold from 09 onwards.

Yeah, they're a fair but cheaper up there and there's a greater set options like air con etc. which is rare in vans down here.

Email the dealer a copy of the draft, or just tell them the number and issuing branch, and they will be able to verify before you arrive.

You have better protection if you pay by CC. Transfer the money to your CC and pay that way if they accept, contact your CC company before hand to let them know you'll be making a large purchase in case it flags.
