Focus Overheating problem

I have a '05 diesel 1.6 Focus. Have had a few problems the past few weeks and after dropping over 300 quid to a garage, assumed they would be fixed, but no.

Basically the engine started to overheat. Looked at the water tank, and it was dry, so filled it with water, but the same thing started happening again. Obviously enough, I had a water leak, and the lad in the garage told me that he sorted it. Was driving on the motorway then last Thursday, and same craic, the temperature gauge started to rise and i started to lose power. I pulled into a petrol station, bought water, and filled it up again. Off she went again, no bother. But now this evening, it overheated again!

Another issue i've been having is the engine systems warning light comes on every now and again when i'm motorway driving. When it does, the power in the car when taking off basically goes. After a spot of googling, I see it's called limp mode. The guy in the garage couldn't tell me what it was - i'm starting to this lad was a total piss taker!

Advice on the above problems would be most welcome.

The obvious piece of advice is to take it to a different mechanic but I don't think that's what you want. However I'm not sure what you really want.

The problem could be a head gasket and that would (or should) give symptoms like oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil. It could also be a leak in the oil/water inter-cooler (not the air inter cooler beside the radiator) which would give the same symptoms. The symptoms are mayonaise on the dipstick or black gunge in the expansion bottle.

However the problem might be a simple leak. The three most likely locations are water pump (leak from engine on driver's side), radiator (look for obvious damp patches) and the heater matrix (damp carpets and/or sweet smell of coolant in car)

All the above advice is on the presumption that you want to check it yourself, but you may be looking for advice on where to go. Like I said, I'm not sure what you really want.

Indeed. If you have paid him money to solve the problem, i would suggest bringing it back and asking him to fix the problem or get a refund and take it to someone competent.
