Electric fire to open fire?

We have a fire place in our house with a chimney, currently there a wire in it for a electric fire that's connected to a switch near it, how could you change it to a open fire, just get the wire removed and get a grate? haven't a clue to be honest, any help would be appreciated:) Thanks!
