I'm looking to buy a car, the tax is 4 months out of date. If I buy am I liable for the back tax? Or just the tax from the time it's registered in my name.

Nope just the time it's registered in your name. Not your fault the previous owner didn't tax it!

You are liable from the date (month) you buy.
