Should I remind referees to respond?!

After a successful interview, I have been offered a position subject to references. I have nominated my current manager, thesis supervisor and a co-worker to provide me with references. All of these people agreed to provide me with references and were very positive about this.

The new job emailed my referees a week ago. I asked them today if they have had the references back yet and they havent (none of them!)

What should I do? I dont want to seem pushy about asking my referees to respond, but I also dont want my new job to get impatient and give the job to somebody else!!

How long does a email reference check normally take?

    Thanks! :)

You need to contact the Referees individually and remind them. Else it will be put on the long finger and your new employer will start asking questions. Explain to them that your new job is on the line.

Yes, call your referees and explain the situation. If you email them it might not be sorted out. I had to wait over 6 weeks to get a reference from my previous employer and only got one after calling him about it. You already asked them for a reference so a simple phone call shouldn't be any problem.

One thing I always do leaving a job is ask for a written reference. You always have it in your own files then.

Thanks for the replys guys, I will email/phone them all by the end of the week! Guess its worth being a little pushy if a new job is on the line :)

Yes. And eh your not being 'pushy'- your just giving them a gentle reminder. Drop them an email saying your just following up on Xs email from last week etc

If you want the job, be assertive!
