Speed van on N4 at liffey valley

    Hi,

I was heading to Galway on monday. As i was going by the liffey valley junction there was a garda speed van parked up in the white cross hatching which flashed at me as i drove towards it.

I was keeping to the 80kph speed limit and there was a couple of cars close to me but they were going slower than me in the slip lane down to liffey valley.

Does the flash mean it's catching someone speeding?

I got points a couple of months ago for doing 70 in a 60 zone so i've been keeping to speed limit but am a bit paranoid about it.

    Thanks
    Paddy

If it flashes yes it is safe to assume it is doing someone.

I thought the limit was 60kph around that junction?

Theres a 60km/h sign just before the bus stop coming to the m50 junction. I got done ther in june 90 and they said the limit was 80 on the paper. At lest getting to dublin. Im not sure about leaving dublin side

The op said he was heading to Galway and passing the turn off for Liffey Valley. I do believe it's 80 in that stretch up until the M4 motorway itself. Unless there is roadworks going on with a temp speed limit in place he should be fine.

    Thanks for replies,

yeah just after the bus stop on the way west bound the 80 zone starts and there was no road works with temp limit at that time anyway.

It's 50km from before the garage in palmerstown all the way to after the turn off for Liffey valley when heading toward Galway.

Yep 50k all the way till just after the bus stop at liffey valley. Main reason is because of the junction merging with traffic from m50 and people cant obey the rules of the road by crossing a permanent white line!

So if you were doing 80 you were speeding. Also strange spot for camera considering the number of buses that pull it there.

thats pants, same speed limit as the small housing estate i live in :(

but also if im coming off the slip road southbound on the m50 there is a sign saying 60km next sign after that is the 80km one but yet id be still done for doing the 60km

It's 60km/h from just before the garage (here) to just after the liffey valley bus stop (here) when it increases to 80km/h.

That's what i thought cause the road curves so much to where the camera van was sitting.

Cause of the curve in the road, i think the zone before the 80kph would be out of line of sight of the camera when the van was parked in that position.
That's assuming they are looking to catch people speeding in that slower zone instead of speeding in the 80kph zone.

I suppose we'll see does anything come in the door in the next while over it.

Theres nout wrong with putting a speed camera in that location, as far as im concerned far to may people speed on that road

I have driven it many times and its clear that people push the limit on that stretch to nearer 100km, well thats a guess at the speed they do when they pass me :)

Once you clear the M50 junction it's a 3 or 4 lane road and having it at 80km/h is pure revenue raising now that there are no crossing junctions, there are plenty of roads with higher limits which are way more dangerous as they have loads of one off houses on them and junctions.

People coming from blanch direction on the M50 and going to liffey vally have to cross 4 lanes in about 100 metres.

It's because of people with poor observation who don't notice things like this, that the limit needs to be so low.

3 lanes and 1 for the slip to liffey

but its a built up area, the volume of traffic alone is a nightmare, then ya have a few exits just after the liffey exit, down towards the garage etc

The signs on the road there say different..... 60kmph from just after the Palmerstown lights until just after the bus stop BEFORE the Liffey Valley turn-off. Goes up to 80kmph at that point.

but keep trying to scare the lad if you want

EDIT: Just after seeing that I've been beaten to it.

There are bus stops, a bus lane, a cycle track along there. 80 is plenty.

Great stuff, definitely seen flash. Was doing about 65 myself so I'm guessing if its an 80 zone it got someone in front or behind doing over 80. Will keep you posted.

I have lost count of the near misses I have had on the N4 there by some idiot crossing over the solid white line coming from the M50.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 212 ✭✭lavine7

Is this van definitely in the 80km/h section?
Drove by here earlier tonight, was doing just under 80 as I seen the van and even braked slightly approaching it. It flashed as I went past although I was being overtaken by a car to my right in the middle lane at the same time. I was in the slow lane, closest to the van.

Because its close to a 60 zone I'm unsure if it was me or the other car snapped. I do know I was definitely under 80, wasn't under 60 though!

N4 is often riddled with speed vans. Just before the chapelizod bypass, Liffey valley and just before the Lucan village junction are their favourite spots so always slow down there but the visibility on the n4 is pretty good so if the road is clear ahead, you can go faster than the speed limit which 90% of the people on the N4 do!

    Chapelizod is 60kmph.
Pretty sure Liffey valley is 80kmph.

Liffey valley goes to 80 just after the bus stop heading west. Why it's 60 in the first place anywhere a long there is beyond me. 80 is perfectly safe. That road is definitely safer than the boreen up the way with grass in the middle of it

This was on the eastbound section of the N4, just at/just after sliproad for Liffey Valley SC. I think it goes to 60 somewhere approaching the turn offs for M50 but I'm not sure if the van was located in that section as I can't remember if the 60 section starts at LV or further past it.

It goes to 60 km/h just here, which is just after the merge from Liffey Valley to N4 Eastbound. I don't remember ever seeing a van in the 60 section here, between Liffey Valley and the M50.

Yes, that was the sign I seen after passing it that made me think that I maybe the van was in a 60zone. I did try to check Maps to see if there was an 80 sign further back but the pictures on that stretch are old and taken during roadworks on the section where I met the van. Seeing that it must have been in the 80 if 60 only starts past the Deadmans, that car overtaking to my right must have triggered it.

The 60km/h section covers the 2 sets of traffic lights in Palmerstown (80km/h into traffic lights with frequently backed up traffic would be lunacy) and the M50 intersection which has shockingly poor sight lines (due to a combination of constrained space and the reuse of parts of the old roundabout structure).

IMHO it should kick in before the traffic exiting Liffey Valley merges with the N4 eastbound because of the ****ed up need for Liffey Valley to M50 South traffic to cross all the way across the N4 in such a short space of time.

The Liffey Valley to N4 East should never have been allowed join the N4 east of the underpass back in the roundabout days, it should have been cloverleafed back around to rejoin the N4 west of the bridge, there was plenty of space.

Agreed, although it's not as bad as it was before the M50 upgrade, that was a disaster :o

If you are on the Lucan side of the M50 the van is always in the 80 zone whether you're going east or west, probably because thete is nowhere to park the van safely where the road is 60.

However if you are inside the M50, i.e. Palmerstown, the van is often parked on either the east or westbound side of the carriageway which is a 60 zone.

In my experience it's more likely to be parked in Palmerstown at night time but it's there during the day as well.

    Hello everybody
Yesterday at around 13:40 as we we're driving from liffey valley towards Palmerston, where speed limit is 60 and my friend saw the a white speed van parked in grass on left side of the road just before the 60km sign post. So he slowed down to 50km and was in driving in middle lane, a car passed us on left doing well more than 50+. To our surprise the flash went off right in our face as we're near the van while the other car which passed us was gone well ahead of the van. And there weren't any cars behind or beside us....I'm confused why we got flashed when we're doing 50km!?!
Can someone tell why we were flashed, My friend is freaking out....
