Creating External HD from New Laptop HD, Quick Question!

    Hi Guy,

I recently bought an Asus Ultrabook that came with a 500GB Hybrid Dive. I swapped this out for a 256GB SSD, was planning to sell the original but think it might be better to hang onto it just in case something goes wrong with the ultrabook and I need to swap it back in.

I have a 5 year+ old Western Digital External USB 2.0 HD and thought maybe I could use this drive to replace it.

If I were to get one of these:

    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Sumvision-eGem-USB-3-0-2-5-SATA-HDD-Enclosure-Case-/261108545069?pt=UK_Collectables_HardDriveEnclosures_RL&hash=item3ccb48362d#ht_2458wt_1166

Would it be simple enough to pop in my drive and connect to it via USB.

My ultrabook has USB 3.0, so would this be noticeably faster than my current old USB HD or are the benefits of USB 3 confined to flash memory?

    The drive is:

    Hitachi 500Gb
    SATA 3.0Gb/s
    5V 700mA DC
    5400RPM

Any advice on this would be much appreciated:)

    Thanks

    Yes, it'll work just fine.

USB3 should be faster if the drive caddy supports it.

Thanks, it says it supports USB 3.0 so should be ok.

The ad only mentions supporting SATA 1 and 2 drives, does that mean it would work ok with this SATA 3 drive or is there a faster option?

    Thanks again!

If anyone could advise on the second bit, I'd appreciate it!

SATA 3 disks are backwards compatible, they will work on older controllers, of course the transfer rate will not exceed the limit of the controller (SATA 2 = 2.4 Gbit/s).

This means you you won't get the maximum USB 3.0 transfer rate (5 Gbit/s)
