Mortgage Interest Relief after returning to Ireld

    Hi everyone,

I bought a house in Ireland in mid-2011 while my wife and I were living as non-residents in the Middle East for 5 years. It was bought as my primary residence but was never lived in or rented. As I was a non-resident at the time, I had to get a Buy-to-Let mortgage (as opposed to Owner Occupier), even though this was to be my primary residence upon returning.

    We returned 5 months ago.

I am in the process of having my mortgage re-categorised as 'Owner-Occupier' as it is my primary residence and I am a first-time-buyer.

    I have 2 questions:

    1. Will I be allowed to get Mortgage Interest Relief?
    2. Will Interest Relief be back-paid to mid-2011; and how is the back-pay paid to me?

    Thanks for your help.
