I'd pick the Octavia. Have one myself. Only issues in the 5 years I have it:

1: Rear wiper motor. Known issue, and easy to keep track of to prevent the issue.

2: Drivers side airbag. Again, a known issue/ cheap fix.

3: Front wiper motor. My fault, can't blame the car. But was a cheap fix.

Very economical car, very comfortable car. Reasonable power, but easily remapped. And as for the boot.......... ;)

Only hung about the one you've linked o/p is to see has the clutch/ DMF been done. I you take it for a spin, listen out for and noise at idle from the flywheel. Mines not gone yet 182,000km, but my car has been well maintained, and has been pushing out more torque for the past 30,000km.

All in all, a big thumbs up for the Octavia from me.

You should buy a tractor instead.

The Avensis is in a totally different class to the Octavia, being from the class above.

You can do so much better than either of those cars. There's nothing wrong with an Avensis or an Octavia, but rivals do it better. T3S is also very basic for a UK car, it's the same as the poverty spec Aura here but with satnav and alloys. If you must have a UK import Avensis, try and get the T3X, T4 or TR models, the TRs (in the Mk2 model only) have a touch screen satnav.

Q: Which car is most reliable, which car is most efficient?
A: This one has shiny alloys and a touchscreen satnav.

    Car dealers

Guys, what about a 3 series bmw diesel or an Audi a4 diesel. How would they compare to the avensis and Octavia on reliability and fuel consumption?

Both Germans would compare poorly with Avensis or Octavia. But this really is a dismal choice, you can do better.

Can you give me a better example the Stalingrad?

Well I'd be looking for something that didn't make me want to wear a bag over my head every time I drove it, like this maybe...

It's actually quite good believe it or not. Avoid 150 bhp diesels though, get the 120 (eight valve model) as that is more reliable.

Of the two cars you linked to, the Skoda is without question the least likely to give problems. Those model Avensis diesels have problems with the dual mass flywheel, the gearbox and the injectors. To be fair you can have the DMF problem with any modern diesel (try and find something that has had the DMF changed fairly recently if you can), and the facelifted Avensis diesel from late 2006 is much more reliable as well as being more economical and more powerful (that would be better than the Skoda). Probably outside your budget though I'm afraid.
