Dublin to Letterkenny

What is the best way to get to Letterkenny from Dublin?
I am going to a wedding so will travel up on the Friday and come back on the Monday.
I guess my options are driving, train or bus.
Driving is probably the most flexible. How long would it take?
If the bus is comfy then that's ok but if it's a 5 hour trip then it will be hell.
Train will probably cost an arm and a leg.

Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

Good luck with the train - there isn't a railway track within about a hundred miles of Donegal county, never mind Letterkenny!

There's loads of private buses, and Bus Eireann - should take about 3.5 hours, and most of the buses are very comfy these days (having said that I haven't bussed up there in years).

Driving is fine - about the same, 3.5 -4 hours, roads are mostly very good - there aren't any really crap ones until the north and into south Donegal. And in fact they're not even crap, just not as good as the motorway/primary routes that will get you as far as the border.

Train would cost you a couple of billion euro and a five year wait for it to be constructed, as there hasn't been any train serving Letterkenny since the end of 1959. Nearest rail heads are Sligo to the south and Derry city. Buses link Letterkenny to both but not a practical choice for time reasons.

Bus from Busaras takes around four hours. Bring your own coffee as the muck served at the wee-wee stop in Monaghan is beyond vile.

Simplest route for driving is the Derry Road (N2/A5) from Dublin. Turn off the A5 at Strabane for Letterkenny via the N14. Journey times vary with traffic but can also take four hours.

Agree with all of the above, except that we now use the M1 as far as the turn-off for Ardee (can't remember what junction number it is) - takes a pile of time off the journey compared with going through all the towns on the N2 - especially on a Friday evening! The link road across to the far side of Ardee is only about 5 miles.

I'm trying out the run to Armagh via Newry, with the hotel in Armagh as a pit stop. The A28 between Armagh and Aughnacloy is a bit variable though but has very light traffic. Haven't decided if its a better route yet until I do the return journey to Inishowen in a few weeks.

Think John McGinleys buses are slightly faster from Dublin, but Bus Eireann has much more choice of times-only way of getting a train as far as Derry is going to Belfast then Belfast to Derry(which takes about 2 hours 10 mins)

Bus isnt as bad as it sounds, especially if you manage to get a quiet one, bring an ipod, some earplugs and a book. I don't drive so its always buses to Dublin for me
