Impressive that he can still screw us from the grave.
THE MORIARTY tribunal has awarded costs to the estate of the late Charles Haughey. The size of the costs sought is expected to be in the region of €4-€5 million, according to informed sources.
The former taoiseach, who died in June 2006, was the subject of the first of the tribunal’s two reports, published in December 2006. The tribunal investigated payments to Mr Haughey during his years as taoiseach and whether he had sought to do favours for those who made payments to him.
It found that he took payments of €11.56 million between 1979 and 1996, and granted favours in return. It said the scale and secretive nature of the payments “can only be said to have devalued the quality of a modern democracy”.

Absolutely disgusting. Of course, his greater legacy in the form of the actions of his protégées has cost the state far more than €5m.

Is it not incredible that the Tribunal finds against Haughey, yet costs are still awarded. Clearly everyone has a right to defend himself/herself, but when there is deliberate cover ups and massive costs in discovery from the tribunal, it makes a joke of the whole purpose of the tribunals in the first place. The lawyers always win and get paid, any other trade would not get a penny.

    In a word, yes.

I'm pretty sure that other people will have many more creative words with stressed terminating consonants though.

Tribunals are just an insult to the people. They get to rub what they did in our faces and have us pay millions to cover their legal costs for the privilege while getting no punishment for what they have done.

It isn't even the appearance of justice but still tries to pretend to be or be shown to us as such by politicians.

A nice way for them and their buddies to lay in bed with each other and be able to come clean eventually to the public years later but still not be held accountable for their actions.

this is terrible, why should we pay for someone who had all the privilages,
while there is a beautiful family who are caring for their severly ill child being made to pay out half a million ( i think ) because they lost a case,
it is awfully hard on them rearing their family and worrying about this huge cost, and dreading that they could lose the home they have put all their monies into to make it accessible for wheelchair, eg, building larger room, bigger bathroom, lifts to help with getting their child into bed and bath as well as wheelchair, widen doors, install ramps and hearing that they had to fight to get just one extra nappy per day, and trying to give their child the best care and make life better for him and his siblings,
they were on the saturday night show, it broke my heart, and to hear the same week that they are caught for costs, that haughey has all his expenses covered,
it is an insult to all of us,

i know what it is to have an ill child, i have been down that road, and am very angered with what i have heard this past week,
    cushion the rich,
    and trash the ordinary person,
    it is just disgusting

Do the family have any State benefits? Is Maureen Haughey still alive? Admittedly she is 87 but is she still paid a pension?
