Thinking of buying one for 7250euro.

Quick question though, although all these online insurance quotes are good, i'm wondering would there be any hassle trying to insure me and my son on this car? I know that it is a fast car but he will only be driving it the odd time. Do you think it is ok to go by the insurance quotes that the online websites give? Just before I buy this car I would want to check ;)

Is there also any known problems say after 100k? Apart from wear and tear obviously :)

    Thanks in Advance

Ringing the insurance company would give you the answer you want. As for reliability, I'm sure its fine so long as its serviced regularly.

Online quotes are 100% accurate from 123.ie

    Try getting a quote there

Ring the insurance companies and brokers to make sure.

It doesn't matter if he'll only be driving it once in a blue moon, they'll be insuring him for the full year regardless. So it wont help the quote.

Don't really know anything about that car, I'm sure someone will be along shortly who does though:).

thanks for the replies people. I will go to the broker and shop around different insurances tomorrow, all roughly give me 150/month. Its pretty pricey but what would you expect I suppose when they see a 18 year old on a 120bhp!

Hope it all goes well so. :) Lovely car to learn/drive at that age. It should stand by him.

Hopefully they are reliable, i searched high and low. Local dealer wants my car (06 astra) and 5200 for a 2008 golf. bit over the top and when I said about price being 7950 in another dealer up the county she simply said " better go buy there then" crazy.. thought these people want sales?!

would they be costly to fix? worth keeping the car or the type of repair where u'd want to get rid of it once something like that happens?

I just sold my 09 1.4tsi, it is fast for the car size, the car was a flyer and that is the main reason I got rid I found myself driving it fast, just because the response ( accelerator) was there, and I can assure you that your son will do the same, get something with less power, he doesn't need that at 18, red flag to a bull.

Or he will learn how to be a responsible driver since he won't be astonished by power from the next car he gets? I wish I started on a more powerful car, but alas...

Things are bad when 120bhp is described as being fast. :D My yoke has 180bhp and I wouldn't consider it fast.

DSG boxes can give trouble, no surprises there, it is a VW after all.

I had to laugh at the suggestion that Golf with 120 bhp is fast:eek:! That's even more deluded than the TDI owners, who think those engines can move a mountain! Only in Ireland would 120 bhp in a Golf be considered quick, but then again most Golfs in Ireland are total poverty spec muck with a weedy 75 bhp oil burning and very unreliable 1.4, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised!

I know from watching his face he is a responsible driver, he has had to many friends lose their lifes through speed and it has made him realize that anything can make a car crash, Anyways back on topic.. I heard that the turbo's and the gearboxes do tend to cease up after a year of driving? is that for all or just the really unlucky bunch? found another car.. selling due to a new son and the car is 170bhp 1.4 golf, hes giving me a better deal but im half minds about it..

what car would u recommend? to be honest anything thats fast in ireland is impossible to find.. Bigger engine - ok but then there is a larger weight to carry around, would I really wanna carry a saloon around if it was just me in the car commuting?

170bhp 1.4 Golfs are far from reliable. You have both a turbo and supercharger to worry about. They are also not cheap to insure despite only being 1.4

fair point.. im slowly drifting from the gt side.. lol what about golf 105 tdi? i know turbo again can cause issues.. I just want a decent size car with a decent wack of a engine to give that boost when you need it.. suggestions?

Why only Golfs, there are plenty of other similar cars out there that do the same job and are cheaper to buy.

You know that power and acceleration on paper and in real world can be miles apart?

Do you actually have any experience in driving anything in real world?

You probably wouldn't believe me but Skoda Fabia 1.2 htp with only 60 horsepower and 3 pot engine was much more fun to drive then Mazda 6 1.8 petrol with 120 horsepower that I owned for almost 2 years, while Skoda was driven as a rent a car for a month.

On paper Mazda 6 accelerates in just less then 11 seconds to 100 kmh and Skoda Fabia takes around 16 seconds to come to 100 kmh yet I found Skoda Fabia to be better to drive in real world and has more usable power and acceleration where I need it believe it or not.
Even Passat that I drive now with 1.6 petrol engine with only 102 horsepower feels faster in real word driving.
It has a lot to do with gearing in each car.

Actually I would believe to OP about Golf with 120 hp with turbo being very fast and nippy compering to some other cars out there especially if the gearing has been engineered spot on which in my experience VAG engineers can and know how to do and as a result their cars and engines feel faster and perform better then you would expect when looking on paper figures.
