    Delighted they got arrested.

    Idiots.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2012/1007/breaking39.html

Two people have been arrested at Shannon airport during a protest against US drone strikes in Pakistan.
Niall Farrell and Margaretta Darcy were detained after entering the Co Clare airfield today.
Shannon has been used as a transit route for the US war effort in Afghanistan.
Dette McLoughlin, an organiser at the Galway Alliance Against War, said protesters waved placards opposing the American administration’s actions. It is understood disruption was minimal and the incident lasted around 10 to 15 minutes.
“A lot of people are not aware that Ireland is an accessory to what is going on in this illegal war,” she said.
“We have been not just accommodating but participating in it.”
A Garda spokesman said two people were arrested then released without charge. A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
No injuries or damage were caused.
A Dublin Airport Authority spokesman said: “I can confirm an incident occurred and gardai are investigating.”

I wonder did they hug the trees on the way in?

Bunch of idiots, i'm absolutely delighted. About time someone got arrested for all the sh*te they do. What happened a few years back, Did one of them damage a USAF c130 and not even get prosecuted.?

Anyone ever see the anti-war group? They log every us military plane that flies into Shannon or in a 60 mile radius of the airport?

A load of bull if you ask me. They don't even know what they are protesting against, since when did a drone ever go into Shannon. Only Omni's 757, 767 and 777's which is sometimes daily, and the occasional g4 or c130.

The crusties should be thankfull that USAF etc are using and paying for the facilities at Shannon, because if they were not I wonder would Shannon have survived the financial test which was flung upon us?

I really think they should be locked up. Imagine if a USAF plane came in at that moment, there would be some serious uproar about it. They should be grateful that the airport is getting some business and the town of Shannon is getting money for hotels/etc, no matter who comes in whether is be US or not.

The thing is now, they are probably going to upgrade the fence & security there to stop them doing it again. We won't probably be able to get a decent look at the planes or have some "airport police" coming around asking you about 50 questions now when they see you, even though you only have a scanner and/binoculars! lol

Sadly, ultimitely they got what they wanted which was the headline and everyone talking about them. Seriously foolhardy actions over the years from what I can tell these people have no idea about aviation or the potential cost to innocent others as a result of potential recklessness on their behalf.

That said I have no issue with troops on commercial jets chartered or otherwise using SNN or any Irish airport as a tech stop to refuel. However when it comes to munitions of war or rendition of foreign nationals I would draw the line and therefore have SOME degree of sympathy with protestors from this standpoint all be it not how they at times conduct themselves as in this case that is not to be condoned whatsoever.

Thank God we live in a free country where, unlike Pakistan, if we say something un-American we are unlikely to be kidnapped and shipped through Shannon to Guantanamo Bay.

Coyote, most of Pakistan is anti American. That would keep Shannon very busy indeed if what you said was even slightly true. You don't know what you're talking about obviously. In reality there is zero evidence that one single person was ever transported through Shannon to Gitmo.

As for the protestors. That's just the that idiot Farrell of the GAAW mob and his granny or something. They're a standing joke in Galway. They've been seriously out of sorts since Obama came in and no one takes them seriously anymore. Not that they were ever taken seriously.

More alarming to me about the whole affair is the claim by the 'protesters' that THEY had to alert the authorities about the protest. If true, there should be repercussions.

    Bluecode,
Regardless of whether or not anybody is anti American I for one object to our State airport being used to transport kidnapped people to an island where they will not receive "due process" and may even be tortured. So why do we allow ourselves to be so compromised? Well, to somewhat paraphrase a US politician " "It's the money st****"
Incidentally, if the Brits wanted to use Shannon for similar purposes I wonder if the protesters would suddenly become a majority.
We don't have the bottle to stand up to the US lawbreakers.

there is plenty of circumstantial evidence to suggest that illegal rendition flights did operate through SNN. There may not be any hard evidence presented before a court as such because of the many complaints by Irish citizens who included airport workers btw not protestors which were not followed up by the state. If I was to alledge any wrong doing in this country to the Guards they would investigate. They refused to act and investigate on the allegations in SNN. Eventually we were given the word of the US ambassador that there were no such flights. Why his word was taken over an Irish citizen ? All the Guards had to do was act on the complaints by driving up to an aircraft and boarding it which is in their rights to do. Nothing going on ? Fine there you have it but the facts are they didn't and wouldnt investigate as ordered by the state. Political policing at its finest. If it smells like **** it usually is and that stank of ****, sorry.

People protesting on active runways really pisses me off:mad:. They have no idea what's going on up in the air or what emergencies might be unfolding. It's wreckless behaviour that has the potential to put lives at risk or unnecessarily complicate an emergency situation.

Also informing the authorities for safety reasons needs to be done before the protesters climb over the fence not when their already on the runway.

I would hope in a emergency situation, the pilot would land the aircraft , regardless of these ****bags on the runway.

I'm disappointed that they weren't charged.

Drones fly from bases in Afghanistan and are flown by pilots in a section of the military base that is commonly known as Area 51. That do NOT fly through Shannon.

Your head must hurt with all those conspiracy theories.

Maybe you should spend more of your time combatting local issues or staving kids in Ireland or indeed the world. Or maybe that's alright with you.

Apparently it's alright to endanger human life to get publicity. How about next time you go to Afghanistan to protest outside camp bastian directly or do you not have the balls for that.

Anyone got any ideas of when the next protest will be on down in Shannon, I would love to go down and join in , it would be a great opportunity to get some close up airside pics of US aircraft ,and perhaps get to chat to the crews ,
Anyone else in Galway interested in going down there we could poss pool transport or get a minibus.
    Let me know your ideas

I doubt it would ever be a majority. I doubt the numbers would even double. I'm sure the majority of people in Shannon know the phrase "Don't sh1t on your own doorstep"

These protesters are full-time protesters with nothing better to be doing. They would camp outside the Israeli embassy, the GPO or at the Shell Corrib Gas Terminal if the US planes took a few weeks off.

In fairness if runways are such dangerous places then the relevant authorities should be vigilant at all times.

Let's face it we are talking about Shannon which isn't exactly buzzing at all hours of the day.

I love the quote from the pair that as they were standing on the runway they "began to fear for their own safety" and this prompted them to call the relevant authorites

probably the fact that they seen the aerlingus on approach and a ryanair behind it, might have made them re think what they were at !!
