went for a drive today, had plenty oil and water in it and was serviced not so long ago, was driving and and it cut out in traffic, lot of steam from the bonnet, I was able to get it jump started by another car passing by and was fine but making a clanking, rough sound from the car and smoke -not blue coming out the exhaust. car died out again 5 mins later. Waited for 20 mins for car to cool down -lot of steam again from engine and burning smell. when car cooled down I got it jump started again and brought it home. Going to mechanic on saturday -im bracing myself that it is the head gasket gone, praying it is somthing like seal or somthing small

forgot to say no oil lights appeared on the dashboard or change in temp on the guage

    car is a bmw e34 1990

Why did you keep driving it when you knew something was up?

Sounds like a head gasket to me. Shame you kept driving it, that may have made a mess of things. :(

first time the car cut out I thought it was the battery as it was flat when I went to drive it initially, im not 100% sure if the batter cut in traffic or if it was somthing to do with the above, I was less then 1/4 mile from home, so decided to drive it back the distance, might be even less than 1/4 a mile. SEcond time car went dead was just outside my parking spot -Im thinking the car cutting out was more battery related.

yeah , ideally I wouldnt have driven it but was in middle of lane traffic and also had to collect the little one so was weighing up the situation then.
