Hi lads, I need some help here. I have a new T3 Hunter .308 on the way and my mate was looking to get the same one, but he was offered a sako 85 in .270 for a great price. I'm telling him to stick with the .308 tikka but he is considering the sako. What do ye think would be the better option. I was saying to go with the tikka as imo the round is more versatile and better value. Little help please
    Cheers

In relation to .270 ammo is cheap for high grade Hornadys superformance at 36euro a box of 130grain imo, Its flater and harder hitting vs 308 in same load. Sako would be a higher spec than Tikka. Hold their value better and if he wants to do cheap shooting .270 remmy 100grain soft points are 15euro a box. I'd go for Sako that bit quicker even tho Tikka is very good. 308 is a great round both do the same job

If it is just for deer stalking it doesn't really matter tbh because you will probably only go through 100 rounds a year and most of that will probably be zeroing.

If you want something that will go after deer, foxes and maybe some target work then the .308 is the one to go for.

Nope, go for the .270Cheap ammo available, harder hitting flatter round and a fox etc wont know the difference between a .270 and a .308 when its hit by either one..It will be dead

Well i have .270 T3 & love it. But its a pig on recoil if shooting without a can (which I would have preferred); hence my can. Pal has .308 without and much more manageable. But its a seriously good round. Don't know anyone shooting that many rounds that cost is an issue but if ur after a gun that will fold up deer either is a sound bet - but If I could go again it would be .308
    From another whestie

As a hunting round, the .270 is far superior a round than a .308, I can't see the big appeal in the .308 among some people.

As a target round the .308 is a very good round and for a dual purpose rifle (target and stalking) its ideal as it will do both jobs.

But unless you are going to be buying a rifle that will also be used as a target rifle (hunter style rifles like you have mentioned will not be very suitable for target work) then there is simply better rounds out there than the .308

I had a .270 and loved it, I was going trading it in for another higher spec .270 rifle but came across a good deal on a .25-06 so went with that.

Tell him go for the .270 and he will never look back

I'd say buy the rifle he likes the feel of best and forget what the cartridge is. Won't make a damn bit of difference to anything he shoots.

The 270 is definitely a better hunting round. I have had 2 308 rifles and could never take to them. Bought a 270 and find it way better. Mine is a t3 hunter and its a great gun but that said if i was offered a sako for near enough the same money id take it too.

Don't bother with either round and get a .30-06 :D best of both worlds.

Good point. Won't shoot as flat as the 270 but a great round too.

Why not get something like a .300 winmag ? flatter shooting than the .308 and flatter and harder hitting than the .270 if its knock down power at distance you wont be sorry with the .300 wm

Shot placement would insure small amount of meat damage this would go for any of the deer calibers

I agree with that post steyrman. At 1000yards its produces 1700ft/lbs like a .220swift or 22-250 and at 1500yards its the same energy as a 223 at the muzzle. Its a beast

Well, thanks for the replies lads. Just to let ye know, he went for the .308 t3. He would have gone for the .270 if he could reload but oh well, that's the name of the game. I'm glad myself cod now he won't be wrecking my head every weekend to try mine out :-D thanks again for the input guys.
    Happy and safe shooting

It was in westport. I was hoping to have a look at it today but it's gone. Dealer said it was a special offer and the only one he had.

Thanks 4200. Would only change the rifle if it was to another 270.
