Hi guys. I've recently moved in to a new flat. There is a small white UPC box attached to the wall with a cable coming out of it. When I plug this in to the back of my t.v. and scan for channels I get nothing.

I dont want to have to subscribe to UPC as I have enough bills as it is. From reading up on saorview I dont think i can get it as I dont have an outside aerial. Are there any other options? Ideally some sort of a box I can plug the UPC cable into and get some free channels.

    Thanks in Advance

If the box is labelled UPC then that is what it is. UPC minimum price is 23 per month for Digital Value (cannot be ordered through website) that gives a good few channels but none in HD and it cannot record. UPC may also offer broadband and phone. You would need to ring UPC to find out what services are available at your address. They are freephone 1908.

Besides UPC, the management company may allow dishes to be installed on an outside wall. A UK free to air system would give the main UK channels with no monthly bills for a once off install of about 200 Euro. Check with the managment company first. If dishes are banned some people have had luck with minature hidden dishes or camoflaged with plants etc.

Saorview (the Irish channels) needs an aerial. In some places an indoor aerial may work, or if not even an indoor aerial mounted on a balcony or hung out a window. You would need to hook up the indoor aerial to a Saorview compatable TV or a Saorview box connected to an old TV. An auto scan might work, but it would be best to hang the indoor aerial out the window during a scan, and then try it inside afterwards.

Argos will take back indoor aerials and Saorview boxes within the (14 day?) period if you have packaging etc.

The cheapest indoor aerials can be bought in pound shops etc although you might need an extension lead to give you the choice to be able to move it around for best signal.

Let us know how you get on and we can advise.

Okay thanks for your help. I'll decide in the next few days what to do. Might chance getting an indoor aerial for saorview
