patch placement on BJJ Gi's and IBJJF rules

I am looking at designing a Gi and the rules seem quite vague in regards to placement of patches.

Firstly, it only details the application of patches, does anyone know if this also includes direct embroideries or direct print?

I have seen a photo from an IBJJF competition and a competitor has a patch affixed where I would like to embroider a design but it seems to go contravene the guidelines - is it possible to embroider a design in this area?

Are there any issues with using direct embroidery rather than patches?

If anyone has any experience or advice, its much appreciated.

    Cheers

If the patch pictured stops before the side seam, it's fine since it's above the midseam. Direct embroidiery is fine as far as I know - direct print might run into difficulties if it seems "shiny" and could make gripping more difficult. As with all things in BJJ competitions it really depends on which officials you run into, so I'd always err on the side of caution (unless your instructor is famous :D)

Thanks Clive, so what are are saying that if it doesn't go over the side seam and above the mid seam its fine.

    Direct embroidery is also fine?

I kind of thought that direct embroidery would be OK as it wont come loose like a patch but was unsure as it is harder to grip and might prove to be an advantage.

Ha ha, exactly what I was thinking but its a bit of a pain as I would like to do something nice but yet its hard to work within the guidelines as they are as clear as mud!

I've a Brand #1 gi with a patch by the lapel, I've a Brand #2 gi with embroidery (thick embroidery) in the same location. both seem to be fine for competition from what I've seen.

What are the brands and types? PM me if you don't want to post them please.

I think this Hayabusa gi is illegal.

Good luck with it. By all accounts, it's a tough process especially dealing with the factories in Pakistan. They insist on a minimum batch size. Maybe reach out to Tattami on go design, they seem to have a quick turnaround on designs.

PS: A gi doesnt really need to be legal to sell anyway. A lot of people buy fancy gi's just to train in, hence the popularity of shoyoroll.

Thanks, have all that sorted and yes it is a very tough process!!!!

I just need to confirm the logo placement and I have mailed the IBJJF but they haven't replied. Might have to play it safe but its a pain as the guidelines are so bloody vague.

True, but I would rather its legal than getting it done only to find out that it can't be used in competition!

Brand #1 is Shoyoroll (50/50 gi) and Brand #2 is Storm (Typhoon (not the T2)).

By the way, the Storm gis are awesome!

You'll be waiting a while to hear back from the IBJJF. I contacted them to see if some a rashguard design me & my girlfriend did was competition legal. I didn't hear from them for almost 2 months. We made em anyway.

They replied yesterday... weren't very helpful to be honest!
