Heading over to Gran Canaria for a weeks cycling at the end of January, and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on bike friendly accommodation and bike hire. Ideally the accommodation would have air con and 2 bedrooms, and ideally the bike will have wheels and a saddle.

    thanks,
    Lenny

I've rented bikes from Free Motion a couple of times. They're great to deal with and the bikes are top quality cannondales - you'll see them listed on their website. A bit pricey though. Probably cheaper just to bring your own (assuming you fly Aer Lingus rather than the other crowd).

Any of the apartment/villa type accommodation is bike friendly. It depends on how much you want to spend. I go out to GC every winter and have stayed in a few places. Cordial Green Golf in Maspalomas is the best quality place I've stayed in (I've never gone to the plush hotels down in Meloneras - bit out of my price range), and if you check out Cycle Gran Canaria's website (Irish lad doing cycling holidays down there), you'll see thats the accommodation he uses. But, whereas you'll pay about 450 quid a week in Cordial Green Golf, you'll also get decent, but basic, accommodation in places like Vista Oasis or Duna Beach (I'd like the former), for about 200 for the week. The villas are 1 bedroom, but for 200 quid a week you can get one each.

The accommodation doesn't have air con but you won't need it in late january. It still gets very cold at night, and isn't warm enough by day to make being indoors overly uncomfortable (still lovely mind you). They generally all have roof fans, which I find do the job nicely.

If that kind of accommodation wasn't what you had in mind, I'd still recommend Maspalomas as the best area to stay in for a cycling holiday. Its suitably quiet to get away from the mayhem of the busier resorts, and its well located for a number of different routes (if you stay further over in Puerto Rico you will limit yourself).
