    Dear All-things-Retro regulars,

I've been noticing that many of my favourite comedians of today, are all taking the piss out of the stuff that occurred in retro-land, but I seem to have been laughing for the wrong reasons, because there seems to have been a heavy dosage of truth in their sketches or jests, you might say.

For example, the hypocrisy of the Jimmy Savile thing that has surfaced just now - still not proved, bear in mind - is totally reflected in Enfield's and Whitehouse's Smashie and Nicey. Anybody who laughs at that surely is also recognising their entire mistrust of Savile's and Blackburn's "work for charity".

Harry Enfield - particularly - bases his sketches on old/retro material which seems to try to pull the worst out of the past. And I laugh at some of the better ones.

Why am I laughing? I should be crying. The Savile accusations -unproven- are filling me with the wrong sort of tears, and I wasn't even a fan.

I use to take pleasure out of visiting the past. Now I'm suspecting that the past was a nest of vipers, with people in power makinig habitual and flagrant abuse of it.

I can also imagine some kid knowing what was going on when Savile visited (this is fictional) and getting clipped across the ear for saying something like, "Savile's coming over for a feel", but that he was fundamentally right.

So you'd get punished for saying things that were true, in a sense.

So that's what, retro-land was actually a cradle of filth. Over and out.

thats a rather one sided view of the past if you dont mind me saying

whilst I dont argue with the accuracy of your comments it doesnt tell the whole story. Id even argue that it is accentuating the negative rather than the positive

    oh ah the hindsight virus....
ye the past was ****e... my da goes on about the good old days in dublin...when in fact they had neither food nor shoes..however we all have good memories and thats what the retro thing is about, not having a go or anything but if for you the past was a nest of vipers because of the actiions of media then you're missing the point, they're portraying stylised situations...and I'm not sure it's wise to go condemning saville on allegations . theres no better way to ruin a character than to add a good helping of scandal.. now I'm not saying he's guilty or innocent, just pointing out that anyone can say anything.. and if you're a man, and sex is involved..it usually sticks even after an acquittal.

I'm not sure smashey and nicey was about mistrust, to me they were highlighting how cheesy the nineties thought that whole radio jock thing had become...saville certainly wasn't shy about wearing gold and hiding money....his presence alone could generate a crowd, and thats all charity needs...now if anything is dodgy..its charity.....

in twenty years they'll be discussing the anglo footage on reeling in the years, and there'll be an evelyn cusack thread...grainne will look well for her age and well I'm not sure how the cartoons thread will fill out tho...there's nowt on these days but rubbish

as for people in power abusing it... read livy, or any of the classical roman authors, they read like broadsheets.....todays broadsheet..

It's blindingly obvious that the old days were better.
Have a rummage for a 10 to 15 year old photo of yourself. Stare at same.
Now find a mirror, and look in horror.
    Case closed!
