Anybody in the west / North west heard or saw signs of the rut kicking off ?
Went a few times after reds , only heard one small roar.
Plenty of hinds with calves wondering arround though.
Probably didn't start as yet , just wondering that's all

Yes, a few roaring, but dont think they are too serious yet. very few around also.
Went out friday evening for a listen when a farmer mentioned a few had been roaring for a few nights previously close to him.
Went there Saturday morning, a few roaring half heartadly, every 7/8 minutes, twice got in to less than 20 yards to one fine beast in the trees but would be trying to drag him out still, if had taken him.
Same this morning, with a friend, worked in on one giving a roar only every 20 minutes or so.
Called while watching him but would not respond, left him too, both getting old enough to not want to drag a big beast 1km over rough ground any more.

Only got out for the first time this season this morning and was quite surprised at how low-key it was. Only one or two whistles and relatively little sign. This time last year you couldn't have heard yourself think with it! This is sika country, now.
