New Year break

I'm not a fan of New Year's eve nor is one of my best friends. Decided that we should either go away for NYE on a short break or potentially a week in the sun. We could cope with NYE and fly out new years day for a sun trip if it came to it.

Cost is key. I'm leaving from Dublin and her from London so somewhere accessible from both would be ideal.

Any suggestions? The only thing I've looked into so far is Edinburgh but hotel prices are mental.

I totally understand the NYE thing....so do 1000's of others :)

Everywhere will be more expensive at that time of year.

All I can think of is, if your friend is in London and you are both determined to get away, a package deal from London might be the answer.

They are usually cheaper than from here. Of course you'd have to get to London, so figure out the pros and cons of that.

The other thing is...Edinburgh is fantastic for NYE. I know its a small fortune to stay there but have you checked out hostels?

Thanks! Hostels not really an option, we've both had negative experiences before which would totally put us off. Can't believe 2-3 nights in an Edinburgh hotel (no flights) is coming out as the same price as a week in the sun including flights.

    Back to the drawing board!

You do realise that New Year celebrations (Hogmany) in Edinburgh is huge!!!

Hotels get booked a year in advance if you can get them.
Its the same for The Tattoo in August.

Yeah I do know how big it is, Edinburgh is synonymous with NYE, probably which is why it was our first thought. It's been a pretty crappy year, we just both need to get away from it all for a few days.

Much of Europe is freezing in January and budget isn't massive. Have been looking at Malta and Vienna, and have just seen a post on another board about Turkish Airlines doing good deals to Istanbul. Have been there before, hadn't considered it for this trip though.

Myself and the missus went on a package deal to Istanbul for New Years a couple of years back through Abbey Travel and Turkish Airlines. I can't remember how much it cost but it think was a grand for 4 nights hotel bed and breakfast and the flights. A little bit expensive but it was somewhere different... Taksim Square at Midnight... frickin mental... what an atmosphere!! Would go back again sometime!
