A few questions on behalf of a nephew.....

Is Ratoath the only BMX track in and around Dublin?

Do you have to be a member to use it or can a non-member turn up and use it when it's open at the weekends (for a fee)?

I'm assuming to race he'll need a CI licence and / or join a club.

You have to be a member to ride Ratoath. No need to join a club to race and one day licences are generally available. Cherry Orchard does bike rental, lessons and the like, so if he's not BMXing very frequently it might be better.

I believe that Ratoath memberships run on the calendar year, as do Cycling Ireland memberships. Neither of them do pro-rata rates if you join mid-year.

However, because it's late in the year the club is not pushing for new members to pay a full sub for a couple of months, but do insist that you get a CI membership if you're using the track more than once or twice as a taster, and you'll deffo need one for racing. It's only a fiver.

I am not connected with Ratoath other than through membership; the above is based on an informal chat so best check with the club.

Ratoath and Cherry Orchard have different backing and operate quite differently, it's worth understanding the details before you commit to one or the other.

I was told yesterday that Ratoath is the biggest cycling club in Europe! Apparently they have 550 members!
