hi all, id like to recieve czech satellite tv, ive checked around and most of the channels are encripted, so this would mean id have to get a card and a decoder to view these channels,

Theres seems to be a few different cards available, what would be the best card to get? the main ones seem to be UPC or Skylink,

Also what decoder/reciever do i need to use these cards? will any decoder/reciever that has a card slot work?

Saying you'd like to receive czech TV is all well and good but.
What Czech programming are you specifically after?
Or is it just Czech language tv you want?
As you have already discovered, there are 2 main providers.
You need to figure out which one suits your specific need.
Both offer varying packages, what in particular do you want czech TV for?
If its for your partner, ask them which package they'd prefer(then at least they will be happy with what you get ;) )

Most receivers(e.g Dreambox, Vu+, TM and others) will read the UPC and skylink cards via the inbuilt card reader, you might need to use CCcam or similar software to ensure compatibility though.

You're best bet is to decide which package you want to receive.
Then you can decide which receiver to buy, as knowing what you want to recieve will allow you to match your receiver to your needs.
That said, a Linux box would be my suggestion as it allows a lot of flexibility.
Also remember that you will most likely need to install a new 80cm(minimum) dish to get reliable reception from 23.5e.

I think there is also a czech Free to view card that needs to be registered locally to decode some channels. Not sure exactly what it gives.

23.5 east is your best bet. Some of the UPC transponders are on weaker beams on 1west for reliable reception here. I put up a 1.2m dish for a guy a year or so back for 1 west for the UPC channels. Even that wasn't reliable in moderate rain. If your in the east of the country, you'll have better reception of 1 west, but being reliable is hard to say. I've 23.5 here, that's very strong on an 80 cm for czechlink channels
