Where to buy Liquid Hay

    Hi everyone

I have a sick rabbit and the vet recommended I feed her liquid hay. She is not going to the toilet and needs this to keep her stomach and digestive system working.
He was going to get some ordered but in the meantime, he told me to try some petshops.

I've tried all the vets and petshops I know in my area - Sligo.

Has anyone heard of liquid hay and do you know where I can get some asap?
    Thank you

The only mention I can see of it is for a vet surgeon here in Dublin.

It's made by Oxbow, so perhaps if you ring around a few other vets in the area, they might have some. I'd imagine you're more likely to get it from a vet than a petshop, since it's really for sick animals.

Best of luck, hope your bun feels better soon.

    Hi Silverfish
Thanks for the reply. That's great. Thankfully I had her outside today and she was munching away at leaves and stuff.
She looks and acts perfectly fine, only for the non-pooping and eating very little.

I'm hoping the vet will have it in tomorrow, if not I'll give that place a ring.
My poor bunny has been to the vet 3 times last week, getting injections for this.
    Hopefully she'll be better soon.

Don't know Sligo area at all but Bairbre O'Malley in Bray, Co Wicklow is one of the very few - and probably best small animal specialist vets in country & seems to stock liquid hay:

Maybe give them a ring & see if they can suggest someone closer to you or even send some to you by post/courier?

Thanks so much Lisa. I rang my vet this morning and unfortunately they weren't successful in getting the hay. I was going to ring your number straight away but the vet said she would contact them and get in touch with the supplier.

Thankfully the fresh air and exercise yesterday helped my bunny and she did go to the toilet last night. I would still like to get her the hay though 'cos she is not back to her normal self.

Thanks for the replies both of ye. At least I will be able to have some of this on hand in case this happens again.

Did the vet say what was causing it, was it a blockage or is she constipated?
You can use Origional Complan as a substitute and you can also ground up her rabbit food (if it's something like Rabbit Excel) really fine in a pestel and mortor (or bash it with a rolling pin) and add enough water to get it to the consistancy you need to syringe feed.

There's also Critical Care or another one called Bio Critical (this is more for an animal that has the runs or needs a bit of support).

Glad to hear your bunny is doing well now.

I have a bun who has what sounds like a similar condition & happens every 5 or 6 months. He will go off his food & water (normally has a great appetite) & droppings become very infrequent, very small & hard.

We now deal with this by giving him just fresh green leaves when it happens - I pick whatevers growing at the time, usually a mix of herbs, sorrel, dandelions, nettles, docks, plantains, carrot tops, fruit leaves, etc and feed them to him very wet. Also really good, tasty hay, like some of the Excel herbage. Takes a couple of days but seems to put him right. I also add a little honey & apple cider vinegar to his water to encourage him to drink.

Not suggesting this may be the answer for your bun, always best to follow your vets advice.;)
