    Hey Lads,

I Would usually do this myself, but don't like the thought of a 40yr old tractor and a single axle trailer at 8am in pitch black in Nov/Dec with 4 cattle on board, for fear of breakdown. + its a long drive

my ideal thing would be buy me own Jeep and trailer. . . and do 2-3 trips.

any how, was thinking of getting a lad with a lorry, maybe if i rang the mart they might no of some in the area that might do the job for me.

what cost should i expect for

    say 10 cattle, 450/550 kgs
    15km to mart
    probably about 20 mins.

also, i brought them down myself, but thats different, as i think i had 3-4 trips buying them in lots of 2 and 3s. . .. . . so i was never going to pay for a lorry for more than one trip. . ..
i know buying a jeep and trailer for 5-6 trips every yr to the mart is expensive and paying the lorry lad would be cheaper :pac:
maybe a 2.2 diesel car and a trailer to carry 2/3. . . or what's the max i could carry this way?

    thoughts/opinions/comments. . . . all welcome. . .
    more the better. . .

    Thanks
    NBF

10 a head lots of guys round ere glad to get run including meself as they would be traveling anyway
why not try donedeal and sell them by weight through local mart
i often buy cattle off land like that
no probs with cheque or haulage for seller

I'd say buying a jeep and trailer just for this would be money wasted.

You could consider a good service in the tractor, remedy anything that your afraid off. Get a decent trailer for behind it and your away. Might e a bit of a trip but it's not too often either.

You'd also be bettering the tractor for the rest of the year for all the other times you use it.

We sell through DD too. It's handy all right. I find it handy as it
Saves taking time off work too.
Also I must be the only farming type person who HATES going to the mart. Feckin standing round all day, bad seating, my back would be in bits for days afterwards.

    Often thought about it aswell.

I pay €14 per animal to the lorry man to bring cattle to the mart.

But having your own jeep and trailer is very convient as you can bring cattle when you feel like it and not when the lorry man comes as he is usually late.

Also I hate given money away when I think I could do it myself!

spending money on jeeps and trailers for those kind of numbers is, in my opinion, pure madness. I know plenty of lads with 100+ cattle and no transport.

We haul our own to and from the mart

But going rate around here is 10-14 euro.

generally if you'd only be using the trailer once or twice a year it wouldnt be great value. though its hard to beat having ur own mode of transport.
i know trying to buy stock at the mart im relying on one person for transport which means i can only go to the mart hes at, when hes at them. cuts alot of options out. its part of the reason i hete marts too:(

    Agree with all comments above.

What part of the country are you in? Lads could give you recommendations if they knew that.

If your land is all in one block and the only reason you need a box is for the mart you'd be crazy to buy a jeep and box. Never mind the capital outlay, the annual running costs alone would far outweight the cost of paying a haulier.

I've a local lad who brings the stock to the mart and sells them for me. I know of another local lad who does this. It's a handy few bob for these lads and they're the type who'd be at the mart anyway. The mart is the last place I want to spend all day hanging around! Doing it all myself would also mean taking a day off work and those are too valuable. I'm 20miles from the mart and as an example to sell a bunch of 5/6 weanlings it would probably cost me €80. At a quick calculation the diesel alone for the 40mile round trip at 20mpg would cost €15. That is money very well spent in my view. There is one caveat, you need to trust the lad if he's selling them for you.

At 20mpg each 3 miles travelled currently costs €1. (red diesel)

No, not me. We'd have the odd BBx but in general they're too rich for my pockets.

    Thanx.

Just flicking through DD and there's not many blue weinlings on it. Am contemplating selling some of mine there though. Have ICBF coming out to score 2 pedigrees in a few weeks - will get the blues weighed and dockets printed while there too and advertise them with these weights.

I wonder will lads buy by weight ?

I'd say weights will only help things...
Sometimes I get asked about weighing cattle but never bother...
You do get messers but I usually give them short shift on the phone..
