I want to get a new tv for my kitchen and was wondering If I got a monitor could it be connected to a combi box via hdmi? Would I get the same as if I had it connected to a tv?

Monitors seem to be a good bit cheaper for a decent size hd one

    Cheers

Monitors are often only 60Hz. Decent monitors are actually more expensive than a TV.
You are best to buy a Saorview compatible TV and use the HDMI for the UK signals via a "Freesat HD" box. Superior to a combo, which at best are only Saorview compatible and generic for Satellite.

You get horrid motion blur using a 60Hz monitor on 25i 50Hz TV broadcast which is what almost all Satellite is and absolutely all terrestrial is.

P.S. you mean an LED backlit LCD, or cheaper LED edge lit LCD. A real "LED" monitor is thousands of Euro.

Also beware monitors may have only one HDMI connection. In time you may have a DVD, Saorview box, Freesat box etc. and may require a few connections.

If you ever wanted to say connect a VCR via scart it probably does not have a Scart connection.

Also if you ever wanted to use it as a stand alone TV it would not have a Saorview tuner.

If you ever wanted to hook it to a remote Sky box and use a Sky eye it would not be possible as it has no tuner.

Also monitors may not have sound at all. Nowadays sound normally goes via HDMI meaning in some cases it may be difficult to connect seperate speakers and you may have issues with a delay between the sound and the picture. If it does have built in sound it may not be any good.

I do know someone who has done what you say. They had a problem afterwards that it had not composite video in. This could be handy for video cameras etc.

So yes it may be cheaper, but it is less future proof and probably has less HDMI connections and probably no other connections.

As long as you are aware of the risks you take a chance on saving a few quid.
