British stand-up comedian compares "children's tv today" and "the portrayal of children in the '70's". Children of The Stones and The Changes.

Its kind of an unfair comparison really, Children of the Stones and Changes were for young teenagers and was broadcast around 4.30 in the afternoon whereas Skins was broadcast post-watershed. I'd agree with him that Children of the Stones was just a more interesting story whereas Skins was the usual Channel 4 tits'n'drugs dailymail-baiting shockerama.

btw I first saw Children of the Stones in the early 80's, it must have been a repeat on HTV. It was such an eerie show, much scarier than Doctor Who thats for sure.

Was Ron Moody in that show?

No, you're thinking of Into the Labyrinth, another spooky HTV show

Do you know I remember this programme vividly, but didn't think any one else did and am so surprised to see it mentioned here. So just shows how much it resonated with our memories nearly 40 yrs later.

DVD for less than a tenner at Amazon. Click. The second disc has a selection of other childrens ITV stuff - Sky, King of the Castle, The Clifton House Mystery and Into the Labyrinth

Watched the first episode on youtube last night. It's quite good, very entertaining and I'm in my late 20's.

It was on when I was still going to national school around mid 70's. All I can remember about it is that it used to frighten the sh1t out of me

Now this i seem to remember as being completely terrifying...was it something to do with a kid who got trapped in a lift and transported to an underground kingdom? Or did i imagine it?

Ok, since we're on odd ITV childrens programs of the 70's/80's, I seem to remember a show set in an old stately home and the title sequence focused on a tower/turret at the top of the house that was filled with books...anyone got any ideas of what it might be?

That's the one. Down in the basement where anything goes. That's also available on DVD in its own right - well worth a look.

The Ghosts of Motley Hall springs to mind - not sure if it's the one though.

Or else - maybe Lonely's House? Made by Tyne Tees in 1976.

Thats bloody it an all, cheers! I'm glad it was a real show and not just my brain making sh-t it up :D

I spent about an hour yesterday googling various tv resource websites and nothing, I knew someone here would eventually come up with something ;)

The main itv channel doesn't even do kids tv programs any more, and even if they did there would be absolutely zero chance of them doing a program about anything as cerebral as books!

Had totally forgotten about The Book Tower. It ran for quite a while. Tom Baker presented some of them.

I imagine Network may release it some day.
