have a 1.9tdi avant, 94 with 199k miles, when i bought the car it had a slight grind going into 5th, now after 10k miles it's grinding into 4th also, it goes into gear no problem but now it's as if it doesn't want to come out of 5th, it comes out but just with a little more effort than normal.
is a new box required or anything else cause this?
i'd rather rebuild what i have than get a replacement box and have the same thing happen down the line.

I would think the gearbox is probably gone and will fail shortly... Have you checked clutch fluid and action on actuator piston. If your engine mounts are worn they can cause premature gearbox problems lie you describe. If you fix or change gearbox change engine mounts. When is old my last audi a4 it was on its fourth gearbox......!!

fluid is still ok! going to get it looked at this week. i had heard the gearboxs on these were weak. anyone know where you can get a rebuild kit, at least it will be like starting from scratch instead of getting another box that will end up the same

Yes this gearboxes are regarded as weak but i wouldnt let that deter you from getting car fixed. Secondhand gearboxes are cheap (~150 euro) and thats what i used each time i had a problem. On average i got 70-90 thousand miles before they gave trouble and i am sure they had a few miles on them before i fitted them...They would probably last better if the gearbox oil was changed every 40-50 thousand miles.
I think its a job for a gearbox specialist and maybe better just to bring unit to them.. Removal and refitting is straightforward enough. But definitely consider replacing engine mounts. If you get gearbox redone you wont give a warranty unless the mounts are also replaced.

    Clutch not being depressed enough,
Slave cylinder, or clutch it self is collapsing,
