'05 Jaguar S-Type 2.5l- Need Advice

    Hi guys.

I'm currently stuck in the middle of a dilemma about whether or not to buy this car. It's a 05 Jag S Type v6 2.5l. It's in great condition. It's got a good price too, incl trade in of my 00 BMW 3 series.

My problem is with the engine. 2.5 is obviously more money on petrol and on road tax. My current bmw is a 1.9l so road tax on it is about 650/700, and gives around 30mpg. The jag would be about 1000 tax, and around 26/7mpg.

Can anyone please offer me some advice on whether or not to go for this car? I dont plan on heavy use for it so I just don't know if I should be majorly worried about the engine and all. I can't really afford to pay much more than the asking price for this for any other car either. I could get a much more efficient toyota for ex for maybe 1 grand more, but it just wouldn't be the same as the jag though, you know... What do you guys think, would it be worth the fuel and tax taking into account the decent purchase price and reasonably light usage?

    Dilemma, dilemma.. Any help appreciated!
    Cheers guys!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Nice car, but you need to get a good deal on it as there isn't a hope of selling it on again for any decent money :)

How much is he looking for? About 2k plus your 316?

Colm_mcm here has one (I think the 3l), I'm sure he'll come along for some info soon

    thanks for the reply mate!:D

Not 2k, unfortunately:rolleyes: Looking for 5k incl trade of the 318i. Great mileage, about 40k and amazing condition though. I'd assume it's not clocked considering the condition and that its from a dealer. Think its a fair price?

I wouldn't assume just because it's a dealer that everything is above board.

Also, expecting to get 27mpg out of that yoke, may be a tad on the optimistic side of things being honest. It depends on the type of driving you're doing, but at the same time it's not going to be easy on juice no matter what.

Realistically if you keep it 3 years resale value isn't a concern, if you don't mind taxing and fuelling it I see no reason why not.

That's true, I know what you mean. I just meant that it wasn't a case where all of their cars were below 50k or anything really suspicous like that.

I'd be doing a combination of city and motorway driving really. What sort of figure would you expect youself?

Well I have no experience with that car/engine, only my own 325ci (2001), I would expect low 20's around town and, 30ish on the motorway at a reasonable speed. But as said, Colm around these parts would be better able to give you an idea of that.

You don't buy that kind of car for economy, it's for comfort and power when you want it. I wouldn't be put off by the MPG figures, just thought I'd mention it.

    Best of luck.

Good point, cheers! :) Would probably be in same position as now so, as in just trading it in for a small amount after getting my 4 years out of it.
I think the extra grand per year for both would probably be better than paying 4 grand more upfront for a more economical version.
Really starting to warm up to this now

Yeah I think that's more realistic.

That's a right old point, thanks! :) I guess the luxury and comfort of the car just might be worth the extra fuel costs

    Thanks for the help :D
