    Blog entry here about Hurling and Handball being banned in Galway city in 1527, foot ball still allowed tho:

    I wonder was it ever banned in Kilkenny city.

    That explains why the clubs out in the county have the best record in the country when it comes to winning All Ireland club titles. :)

    And <in before someone mentions> Castlegar - That place was out in the sticks when they won it back in 1980. ;)

    Why should somebody be forced to play a game they don't like? Hurling is the greatest sport in the world, football doesn't even come close. What you should be moaning about is why the likes of Kerry don't play more hurling.

    Lads, have you never heard of the Statutes of Kilkenny, a law passed in 1366 which attempted to stop Norman colonists in Ireland from adopting Irish ways, including the playing of hurling. Apparemtly hurling was regarded as strong in Kilkenny two centuries before anyone tried to ban it in Galway.
