Why You Should Go Pure Mage

I'm back on a Skyrim binge lately and using a pure mage character. The mage starts out as a very fragile character, but my god is it worth it if you put in the effort. This character could become even more overpowered in Oblivion (when you could make your own spells and there were still feather spells), but still dominates in Skyrim if you maximise your skills. Here's a list of why it is oh so worth mastering the arcane.

    • Perfect character for fighting a dragon because you can hit it with long range spells and use your conjured followers to distract it when it lands.

    • The dual cast armor spells combined with restoration and ward spells make you a TANK.

    • Make rakes of money by selling items you enchant. You can also get around almost any issue in the game with the right enchantment. e.g make destruction spells cost nothing, lots more magicka/health, impervious to fire damage, get better prices etc.

    • Use alchemy to create magicka potions so you never have to worry about running out. Sell the rest for even more money.

    • Make the sneak skill completely obsolete with the invisibility and muffle spells.

    • Conjuration is perfect for the mage because it distracts your enemies while you blast away at them. Then when you kill them, you can reanimate them as a zombie to fight on your side. Profit!

    • If you can master destruction you get some very, very powerful spells which can be made to cost absolutely nothing with enchantments.

So there's my opinion. The stealth character is also very overpowered because of the sneak attack bonus, however that character is fúcked if it ends up in a direct combat situation. There are downfalls to the mage too: you don't get to use cool weapons in the game (though imo there aren't as many as there were in Oblivion), if you don't manage to get your defensive spells cast in time you are very easy to kill, and combat with the mage takes considerably longer because of all the fumbling that has to be done with changing spells. Also because they did away with feather spells you will struggle to carry lots of loot.

Also, always bring a follower; preferably a warrior who can carry your loot and distract your enemies/protect you if they get too close. Also being a mage means you can turn that follower a tank with restoration spells and courage spells.
