Open versus Closed system regarding stove

hi, I have a query regarding heating systems...currently i have the closed/pressurised system and oil heating...

In order to put in a boiler stove, it has to change to the open system. It's an old cottage and in severe frost , frozen water pipes happen occasionally.

If the water pipes do freeze, would this mean I couldn't light the boiler stove? or turn on the oil?

With my current heating system, I can turn on the oil heating regardless...

    Thanks v.much

If pipes freeze then any heating system will not work. If the cottage is suitable for solid fuel and the boiler can be converted to open vented then there shouldn`t be any problems. A frost stat will prevent the heating side from freezing but if the mains water freezes then I would not use the solid fuel as there will no supply to the F&E tank.

Systemlink do a product that allows a closed heating system with a open fire/back boiler/flue set or stove. Check out systemlink.ie Their products can be pricey but may be worth checking out.
