Laptop Fan runs Continuously Quite a Lot

Fairly old HP Compaq Presario c300 must be pushing 9 or 10 now, not used
for gaming or streaming movies just plain light use.

Has a tendancy now to freeze a bit/fan can keep running/and top over harddrive can get pretty warm at times, even though I have felt pads underneath to allow plenty of air.

I've blown the grill under hdd out with compressed air, but wasn't happy with the result to be honest.

I'd love to open it up and really give it a good cleaning but as I've never done this with a laptop b4 i'm afraid of bits falling out and not being able to re-assemble it.

Unfortunately can't find any videos on how to do this which would give me more confidence.

Should I go for it, nowt to loose really (have a desktop anyway)

How do I open it, there is one small slot with rubber sticking out of it on each side, do I press these down together and then the whole things comes apart!!

here is a link to the service manual - it will tell you how to take it apart

Crack it open and give the heatsink fan a good clean (disconnect it from the mainboard before doing this), have you run diagnostics on the hard disk itself?

I had a similar model to yours once upon a time. They aren't that difficult to take apart (or put back together :p). It's the only way to properly unblock the vents

Thanks guys, might have a go at this at the weekend.

@ nick, do you have a link for a diagnostic tool.

If you take off the heatsink/fan, you'll need to change the thermal paste that allows good heat conduction between CPU and heatsink.

Yep :) . Vivard on the UBCD is good for that. Just burn the iso to cd and boot off it...

Yes, you really should replace the thermal paste if you remove the heatsink. Not doing so can mean the CPU doesn't get adequate contact with the heatsink. If you will be removing the CPU heatsink have the machine running for 10 minutes before shutting down and cracking it open. Some thermal paste can glue itself to the CPU but if you have it heated up before hand this shouldn't happen :)
