Ok I have heard it stated that "Hand Held" speed cameras must be accompanied by the Garda / Traffic Corp stopping the offending motorist and issuing notice of penalty points etc to be done for a traffic / motoring offence

With the advent of technology is this really the case? I find it hard to believe tbh. I have looked in the Garda website but really cant see anything definitive on there.

Any one have any recent experience with hand helds speed cameras?

True...but to the answer the OPs question the technology is there we just don't utilise it..although I heard there was an Ultralyte with Microdigicam at the side of the road up in Donegal.

There does exist "hand held' camera speed detection devices that the Gardai do use. They are tripod mounted and are basically the usual laser gun with a camera mounted along with it. (Like this: http://www.lasertechtimes.com/post/2006/10/08/MicroDigi-Cam.aspx)

They are rare. I've never seen one. But if they are in operation they do not have to stop you as they just snap a picture.

If a Garda is using the usual handheld gun (i.e. No camera), they must stop you to issue a ticket. This is a far more likely scenario.

The above is not to be confused with GoSafe / Garda vans. An entirely different technology and legal area.

Irish motorists should count themselves lucky they don't have to go up against Gatso, Truvelo etc etc.
