1999 Daewoo Nubira the brakes really are not very good at all.

    Passed NCT yesterday:

    Brake test
    Brake Effort Ovality
    Nearside Offside NearSide OffSide Imbalance
    Front Axle 2.740kN 3.020kN 14% 8% 9%
    Rear Axle 0.640kN 0.840kN 0% 0% 24%

    Service Brake Effort 58%

    Parking Brake 1.110kN 1.180kN 6%
    Parking brake effort 18%

What do these numbers mean and what should I be looking to get done to improve brakes?

Have you had problems in slowing down that rocketship?

^^Useful post  Stopping a Nubira from 100kp/h requires the same force as stopping a Ferrari from 100kp/h.

Anyway, OP, what is the actual problem your having? Is the pedal soft? When was the brake fluid changed last?

The pedal feels a bit stiff and when brakes are pressed you can't feel the car being pulled slower but it does slow down slowly. It's hard to describe. Brake fluid hasn't been change for a few years as far as I know so I'll look into getting that done.

If you have a hard brake pedal and poor brake force then you most likely have an issue with the vacuum supply to the brake servo or with the servo itself.

Roughly how much are we talking to fix? Best/Worst case.

A vacuum pipe would likely only be a few euro, a new replacement servo would likely be a couple of hundred euro. Second hand may be an option for a car of that age/value though.

Thank you so much! If only you were south Dublin I'd have 3 cars with work needed!

Wogious Brake components used on the Nubira, discs are made out of milk bottle tops, ABS is governed by monkeys with ADD. Why not throw it into a good independent and get them to figure it out, parts aren't too dear and you get to head out onto the roads again. Fixing the hole GM/Daewoo built into the fuel tanks on these is sadly impossible as regardless of what you do they will drink fuel like a sailor on shore leave. They beg to be re-cycled into Microwave ovens.

Most of the mechanical parts are the same as an Opel Astra.

That's true! Brakes I'm doing locally really don't like them but I may be in touch about tyres and timing belt!

On the '99?? On the newer ones, yes, the older ones??? Not so sure. GM were not there in '99 afaik. I bought an ex BOI one, 3 years old, for buttons - utter, total, complete, utter(did I mention total?) brutal excuse for a motor vehicle. Mechanics love them though, but they also love Peugeots.

Looking only at the numbers i would definitely have a look at the rear brakes - they apper to be very weak.
As someone mentioned - take them to the garage, changing brake fluid may help.
They would fail you on discs/pads if worn, so it could be anything really.

Just found out the rear brake shoes were replaced less then 50 miles ago, could it be a case there just being bed in? I presume not, just don't want to go mechanic and them just tell me to drive for a bit longer.

The MK1 Nubira was built on a GM platform using mostly GM parts bin stuff, including the engine.

If only the shoes were replaced then the likelyhood is that the drums aren't in good shape and it may take time for them to bed in. Where the cylinders replaced too?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,930 ✭✭✭galwayjohn89

Apparently the shoes and drums are new. Was told the Cylinders need to be replaced. What exactly do the cylinders do and if they are replaced will brake fluid be replaced aswell?

Car has been sitting up for a good while so trying to make sure all fluids are changed along with timingbelt.
