Symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy in Collie.

    My almost-seven-year-old mostly-collie male has lost five of his claws (including both dew claws) over the last two months, and has been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy. I think the expectation is that he'll lose most of his claws in the next few months.
    Has anybody out there been through this? My vet is pretty good, but... I've had a quick consultation with doctor Google, and now I'm worried that the nails will grow back deformed and the poor boy will have to have his toes operated on and he won't be able to enjoy his walk and then where will we be? I need somebody to tell me that everything will be fine.
    Specific question: He has been put on a course of drugs, but can anybody recommend a supplement that might help?

    I have no experience of this condition but I've experience of googling when something is wrong and it's the worst thing you can do because you'll just freak yourself out! The best person/place to consult is another vet if you're not 100% on board with your vet. I did this with for my dog when I didn't agree with the ortho 'specialist' we were referred to - my vet arranged a second opinion who did the complete opposite to the first place (correct the deformity instead of leaving it) and it was the best decision we made.
