re-curring oil warning light- is there a problem?

My car is 04 Golf petrol.

For the first 6 yrs I had never seen the oil warning sign before. figured the oil change via regular service must be suffice.
Last oil service was May this year. In August, the warning light came on. Strange, I thought but replaced the oil none-the-less...

Now 2 months later, the oil sign is on again - WTF??

Just did the NCT which was grand only for one "small thing" - a clip loose on the c-boot.

Anything to do with the new oil issue?

    Thanks.

How often do you add oil?

You have an oil leak, check the ground...then check the water rad to make sure it aint leaking into it...aka headgasket issue.

    Red or yellow oil light

As above, also, what engine is it and whats the mileage?

A yellow light indicates low oil level, a red light indicates low oil pressure(a yellow light will become red if the level gets too low).

The 1.4 petrol engines are extremely prone to wear causing oil burning as the mileage rises.

    +1

If I were a betting man, I'd put money on the OP having the 1.4

After 7-8 years (even with low mileage) using 1l/1000km is more common than not. Worse than Alfa twinsparks :D

changing the oil..is not checking the oil.....which should be checked as often as the car needs it.....that could be every day.....

Yeah the 1.4 petrol golf is a pain in the hole. Its goes through oil like a daemon. The maunal evens says 1l to 1000kms.
I have some cheap ass oil I got from lidl that I keep my golf topped up with

make sure that cheap oil is right grade, i recently bought oil off dealers for wifes 2010 diesel golf, 5 liters for 30 euro (5w30) , id say 1 liter wouldnt be much dearer than lidls one, but vw specific.

I've quite a few people with the same issue on the 1.4 golf engine it really is a bogey engine, what is is that goes in them is it the rings or the valve stems Doc?

If my car was using a liter of oil every 600-1000 miles I wouldn't be worrying about grade, I would put in the cheapest stuff I could find. The harm is done, no point in wasting good money on dear oil

The LIDL one is VW specified, theres nothing wrong with it. The issue is the engine. It doesn't matter how expensive the oil is: if the engine is worn, it's worn, end of story.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

agree... there could be few things which have to be sorted, make sure there is no oil leak ... oil escapes number places.... crankshaft seals both sides, oil sump, camshaft seal , engine head cover seal ... also oil rings on pistons and stem seals, if all that change in once, engine would be good for another 100k miles, if properly maintained.
many people would advice .. get second hand engine ... it usually fine for short time period, or scrap a car ... which not justify invested money already and a specially if you love it.

all these seals can be done while changing oil rings and stem seals in one time.

it is not cheap though if you ask somebody else to do the work.

my car (typical oil eater - toyota avensis mk1, 1.8 petrol) starting acting also, i am consider do all work myself.
