Hello, i have been threatened to have this happen to my website.

    what does it do exactly?

what actions are required to recover whilst site is down? is it easy to recover?

Can this attack ironically boost your google/search engine rankings? (as during the attack it refreshes your domain 000s of times apparently).

    Thanks

I would advise getting a load balancer or decent firewall in place to stop this. And informing the police that you have recieved threats.

And no, DDoS generally does NOT increase sites ratings.

A DDoS attack basically floods a site with junk traffic, to exceed its bandwidth, rendering it unavailable. I wrote some more on my site, can't be arsed rehashing it as I want to sleep, so here: http://insecurety.net/?p=18 (there are other posts also)

Perhaps warn your webhost about these threats? Generally the right thing to do.

Might be worth a look, http://www.cloudflare.com/features-security - does a fairly decent job
of filtering out the bad stuff if you dont want to build your own firewall/loadbalancer/waf

Cloudflare are more than "worth a look". Recently they fended off a 65gb/s DDoS using DNS Recursion flood, with no downtime to their customer. Though you want to be paying for your service as the free service is not so great.

Unless you have upset more than one person loic will not knock over your site unless it has underlying issues. It requires many users to collaborate knock over your site.

In the case of a more "sophisticated" attack utilizing botnets and sheer volume of traffic then your in trouble.

The only way it'll boost your search rankings is if people talk about your site....

Your first port of call is to have a conversation with your hosting provider and work your way through the sensible advice above.
