Anybody with any inside info if Skyplans to offer any reduction on new multi-room (for existing customers) to compete with saorview on 2nd/3rd Tvs. Half price for a year for existing customers would be a good enticement. Or should I just dream on.....

Saorview makes no difference to Sky & vice versa.
Sky's Competition is UPC, and for Sky Box office /PPV, the Netflix on UPC, which TV sub isn't needed for, only UPC BB.

Add a Freesat box (or even a Freesat HD PVR) to your dish and have 92% of your viewing, free, a saving of €180 per year (or more if prices rise). If you have Sky+ or SkyHD you already have two spare connections.

Sky & UPC have really no relevance to ASO.

I think ASO is making people slowly aware that most popular channels are available FTA (as you say) e.g.with a Sat/DTT combo. This alternative is to some extent competition to SKY. All the more reason I'm supprised there was not more of a marketing effort by SKY to get more of the the analogue brigade signed up at a discount. I'd pay half price for multi-room for the convenience of SKY+ but not an extra €15 for multi-room forever. A cut price package for a year or a few tailored packages would have pulled in a few more subs for them IMHO.

Pay TV is already beyond saturation at 82% of households. Sky can only hope to not lose customers that want Broadband and Netflix in the larger towns and all the cities to UPC.

Most people that don't have Pay Tv will not sign up at any price and with any offers they risk cannibalising their own customer base of people more than one year and committing fraud by pretending to be a new customer.

There are special offers on box and install cost for "real" new customers.

Was in same predicament - looking for multiroom for a playroom. Was going down the route of a combo box - saorview and freesat - had no connection - so new lnb from dish to room was also needed.

After weighing up options, went for sky as there was free installation and a free hd box - 12 month contract.

Main driving factor for going the multiroom route, was down to choice of kids channels - Freesat and saorview don't have a great selection.

Will review again in 12 months - but given the effort involved in installation (dish on chimney) - was just about worth the 12 months sub - oh and the living room is now mine again!!

The capital savings in not having to replace the 2nd TV and/or the hassle of having to arrange the installing saorview and satellite equipment yourself comes into it big time. Your sat infrastructure is in place now so you have options in 12 months. Will be difficult to break it to the kids if you go back to FTA in 12 months though!!

The Pay TV kids channels are pap. Kids are better without them. Who decides what is good for them?
