I cant go to mart for 5 to 6 weeks as I got locked with 2 reactors this year
I am overstocked and have little feeding
I have about 20 I could get rid of late calvers high cell count etc
some are thin some have a bit of flesh
My question is would it pay to fatten with bags of maize meal at 360 a ton
and sell to factory or should I just house on silage and sell at mart after next test

if they where mine i would dry them off and feed them like mad for a month and then factory

Depends on how thin they are, a months feeding may only bring them back to ordinary condition. Sounds like you could be low on feeding as well if your overstocked on such a wet year. Maybe the mart would be the easiest option
and let a specialist feeder take them on

feedlot status herds can buy such animals, animals are now costing €100 a month to fatten, would your cows be worth €200 extra after 60days feeding. Doubt it. live price is nothing hectic at the moment as no one has feed. I was expecting 2 deliveries this week neither which has turned up yet. I just can get what I need at the moment irrespective of price

I had five fr cows for the price of one Lm cow one day this week. Unfortunately either may not make money:eek: given the feed costs at present

i am assuming the op is awaiting a clear test? so in my mind if he dried them off and fed them for a month even if the next test isnt clear they could be sold to factory, dairy cows dont weigh well when sent to factory straight from the parlour- this i learnt the hard way

I had thought about 50 a month + silage 4 or 5 kg maize @ 36 cent a kg for 30 or 40 days the thing is what will factorys pay in mid nov or december
around 5 are almost fit 10 are midling and 5 thin first or second calvers
The risk is if one went down in final test and nothing was fit to kill I would have to send thin p grade cows to factory as I wont have feeding or money:(

IMO the best idea is to go with the feed on option.
If you pass you have the option of mart or factory, if you fail you have factory.
Feeding them on isn't going to make you a fortune, but it keeps your options open.
Can see you loosing, by feeding on.

bTW, cows out of the parlour straight to the factory just don't weigh.
A 500 euro cow could easily make 800, after 200euros of feed, in 2 months time.

prices have hardened over the last few weeks, but dead prices have gone down, more demand from farmer feeders. dont understand the logic myself as feeding a bad cull cow @ €3 a day dont make sense to me

Just out of interest how did you arrive at €3/day for feed costs? How much silage at what price/Tonne DM and how much of what type of concentrate?

I have a few in fairly good order getting a lot more feed than they're returning in milk for the past 2 months. I reckon a month would get them up to the 700lbs on a reasonable do but maybe I'd be better off moving them on.

that what its costing me to feed a 650 kilo bull/bullock/heifer, but then again cows would eat more than a bullock or heifer and after a change a couple of figures on my excel sheet for a 650kilo cow eating 3% of he LW it is costing me €4 a day. thankfully I dont feed many cows. what cows I have eat the left overs

Would you remove an anti sucking device from a culk cows nose before you bring her to mart?

i have 12 empty cows milking, what do ye think of milking them once a day and feeding them 8kg meal and silage a day, would they fatten in 2 months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,678 ✭✭✭stanflt

it will cost you 250per cow for 8kg meal and silage for 60days

they will definately improve and if there giving any drop of milk it will pay for the meal but to get cows to kill out they need to be dry for a while.
