Harvey Norman at it again

See in the Harvey Norman switch over mag on page 7 that they have a 4life satellite decoder for sale at €99.95 but the one in the picture is clearly a combo box. People looking at this will think that they will be given the box in the ad.

The text says "digital satellite receiver". The (I would suspect) minority who spot the difference in the picture, will question this & everyone else will just be happy with their satellite receiver.

Happens all the time in these catalogues. I saw a portable CD player advertised for 9.99 in a Harry Moore (remember him?) brochure years ago. Turned out it should have been 49.99. Did I get it for 9.99? Turned out the catalogue was "an invitation to treat". And they decided to cancel the invite.

It clearly says SV400 beside the box which is the Combo version, so it is the combo version they are selling for that price.

Its unapproved. But does take a hard drive via the SATA HDD slot. Be aware no LAN connections or CI slots.

Are you sure it's not Saorview approved? From what I have been looking at, they aren't selling anything that hasn't been approved?

I went to Harvey Norman in Limerick last Wednesday, loads of big signs splashing about SAORVIEW, looked impressive but when I asked about that SV400 was told not in stock expected soon. Asked if any working boxes on display..... NONE zilch nothing. Got a friend to look in Cork store, again not in stock.

I went to maplins and found a few items but I had to ask, a few plugged in but no remotes. I must admit I was gobsmacked. No effort to sell the saorview bits and bobs BUT a big effort to make everything as confusing as hell. Maplins were selling a uk box that wont even pick up saorview.

    Buyer beware but very disappointing.

The 4ife Satellite Combi Box (SV400), 4ife Digital Set Top Box (IESV201) and Mini Digital TV Box IET4850 are not Saorview approved, despite the claims on the website that has this logo.

saorview.gif This has been corrected in 2 of the cases with the removal of this logo, but not for the last one which is not approved.

The 4life SV600 is the the only product Saorview approved.

Didn't mean to imply it was ;)

I found this video interesting regarding the fitting of the SATA drive

Harvey Norman are not the only chancers.

The Dairygold Co-Op has a big display with a Saorview approved TV and large Saorview approved poster.

The shelves underneath are full of overpriced non-approved partially compatible DVB-T / MPEG4 HD generic boxes and they have NO Saorview approved setboxes. They are also promoting Freesat/UK Channels but only with overpriced generic SD satellite receivers.

    Very disappointing.

I think it's only going to get worse unfortunately:(

If it's not on www.saorview.ie it's not approved.

Nor is there such a thing as "Saorview" compatible or "Saorview" ready. No-one can prove that without certification. They can only claim it's DVB-T MPEG4 HD compatible and must NOT mention Saorview if it's not Certified as that is misleading.

With all the unapproved STB's and Combi boxes been flogged as saorview approved for the last year.

It's like what the song title says.

It's all about the MONEY MONEY MONEY.

They do work Navarre. What I don't like seeing is people using the Saorview approved logo with boxes that quite obviously aren't approved. Some people want that peace of mind. Either way Saorview don't want their logo misused for non certified products.

Harvey Norman need to be told that they are misleading their customers as to what is approved. If they are going to list all of their boxes under Saorview they need to clarify which ones are "approved" and which ones are not. In some cases they have Saorview certified logos in places they shouldn't be.

STB I agree but its not just Harvey Norman. Look closer to home a registered retailer flogging FTA satellite kits as Saorview is not on at all.

This isn't a problem in Harvey Norman stores up here since they don't do T.V.s any more.

Both stores have shut down their computers/electrical departments several months ago, which is a shame.

I think it's good. They should stick to furniture or get more clued up on Purchasing and more honest on Marketing.

But the clued up and honesty applies to Currys/PC World, Dunnes, Tesco, Maplin, Dairygold Co-Op, "Expert" franchise Retailers, Aldi, Lidl etc.

Being deliberately pedantic, in terms of Civil Case against Harvey Norman:

No, they only partially work. Nor can Harvey Norman or a purchaser know which parts of Mandatory features of Saorview are correctly implemented.

Plugging it in and getting picture and sound is not an adequate test under sale of goods act (SOGA) to claim "Saorview" compatible.

I should take a photo of Dairygold Co-op's disgraceful "Saorview" display that only sells generic DVB-T MPEG4 HD boxes that would fail certification.

The ASAI have been proven many times to be only interested in a "level playing field" for Competition, not honesty and accuracy for the Consumer. They don't get adequate independent advice in cases but simply accept the statements of vendors.

The only option is to continually name and shame retailers. Invariably they need threatened with court to give consumers their rights under SOGA.

Never ever buy an extended warranty from a Retailer.

I see they're advertising an indoor aerial with one of their Saorview kits! Wonder what potential users will expect to get from this? They'd better be close to the transmitter!:D

And as bad as it is now, its about to get a whole lot worse as stb's both approved and generic are getting low in stock with alot of suppliers, and the end of analogue looming.
In alot of cases its connect up a box that shows a picture and there you go.
The generic boxes may work fine now but only saorview certified boxes are guaranteed to be suitable for saorview modifications and additional features in the foreseeable future.
I doubt the generic boxes will go blank in a few months but this cant be guaranteed either.

and typical of ireland no real regulation
