Tattoo Copy

Absolutely raging. Got a tattoo in January by an artist (won't name any names yet) and found out last night he did pretty much the exact same piece for someone else.

My piece was drawn up for me, but he must've kept the stencil and used it on someone else. I'm going mad as it has a big meaning for me and for someone else to have it ( presume he seen a picture on the artists facebook page and said ''i'll take that one'') is a disgrace!

    Rant over.

I've seen tats similar to that numerous times so it's hardly exclusive in fairness.

A quick google image search throws up these...

I know, but it's fairly annoying it's nearly the exact same - minus the cross. I mean it's bead-for-bead and everything!

Well that's very true. You'd think that he'd make some effort to make it look some bit different. To be honest, if I were you I'd be pretty pissed as well.

The original design wouldn't have been completely original either, drawn up from another tattoo I'd imagine.

But for the artist to use exactly the same stencil is incredibly unprofessional.

It's false advertising aswell if they claim to do 'custom' work.

TBH, that is a very popular tattoo and I know of 2 people myself who have almost identical pieces. Are you sure it was actually drawn up for you and not a stencil he had already?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,808 ✭✭✭rizzee

@twowheelsonly - Thanks. The fact that it was drawn up for me too, he should've got rid of the stencil afterwards. Anyway, just posting up my rant to get it off my chest! Have wrote to the artist publicly on facebook yesterday afternoon and no reply - suprise suprise.

@fewtins - I understand that it's a popular tattoo, I just wanted mine to be a variation of it, not something someone else has exactly, if you know what I mean :) I agree with your unproffesional comments, i'm very dissapointed in him.

@Maxi moose - yes it was definitely drawn up for me, I went up to him about 3 times within 2 weeks and we put a couple of drawings together to get the final piece.

That is pretty lame then, very unprofessional

Here it is now, I plan on getting a good bit of variation and some colour in the clouds when my psoriasis calms down.

I know it's very common, I didn't create a thread to talk about that. I'm here to talk about the similarities between mine and his and how the artist should not have used the same stencil.

I would imagine that it wasn't drawn up for you either. He took it out of a flash book and used it on you, he wouldnt have used the same stencil but obviously used the same picture.

But the OP is saying that in the original post it was drawn specifically for him.

If it was taken out of a book then fair enough yeah nobody can complain.

I would highly doubt it was drawn up specifically for him. Unless the OP was there watching it being drawn then id wager that it was taken from a flash book, and a poor one at that.

Honestly, it doesn't look different enough to any of the other similar ones that I've seen to look drawn specifically. OP can you tell me what the custom touches that were done specifically for you were?

That's what I was thinking, I wasn't trying to say the piece hasn't been done before. The point I was really trying to make is that it's bad form for the artist to say that he's drawing up specifically for this guy.

    Thanks for all the replies.

@ Damo & Melion - we looked at different hand sizes and styles (e.g an old persons hands, young person, male female) then looked at beads and beating patterns and placements, then different sizes and styles of crosses. I was there when he sketched a few different styles in front of me, so it was meant to be a custom tattoo. Hope this clears it up a bit.

I'm not arguing that it isn't a popular tattoo, it is! But for something to be custom, done for me, this is dissapointing putting MY drawing on someone elses body.

Were you there when he drew that EXACT design?

No, just when he showed & sketched me different types of hands, the bead placements and crosses. He did it like a 3-step kind of thing (hand, bead, cross). As I said, I went in 3 times within 2 weeks before the tattoo, with the last time being about 2 days before I got it done. Then he put it all together for me. It's what I wanted.

It took him 2 weeks to do that? I think the issue you should have is the fact that he told you it was a custom drawing just for you when in fact he took it from a book.

No, I was popping in and out arranging a date to get it done, checking out his other work, a friend of mine was getting 2 pieces done in between this time too so was in with him also. You want to link me this book then? It's what I wanted and the style I chose obviously it's a popular tattoo many aspects will be the same on different people but this is almost identical and was done by the same artist which bugs me!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 10,259 ✭✭✭✭Melion

But surely he can say he changed the drawing because the shading in the cross is different

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,808 ✭✭✭rizzee

Of course he can say that. It's very cnutish but yes, he could. Use my stencil then rub off the cross and freehand that one in a few minutes, voila. Doesn't stop the fact that he used it in the first place.

It wasnt your stencil, i really think you need to realise that.

I'm still waiting on your link to it in a book?? Should really post one before making comments like that. Anything I say you're trying to reference it to being from a book! I'll just leave the thread like that, you don't seem convinced it was drawn for me but whatever

I'm sure that he's not making reference to a particular book, but rather the various books of tattoo flash that are available. Honestly, I think that he may have told you that it was custom, but it really wasn't. Or that someone else requested pretty much the exact same thing, and he just used the same elements in the same way again.

Honestly, unless you saw him draw it up in front of you, you've no way of knowing if it actually was custom. Honestly, there's nothing in the design that I would point to as being unique, so I would not imagine that it's truely custom. You're taking his word on that though.

I can see however that this argument will probably continue to go in circles, and you're just going to get more irate with people, I'm going to close this. As for you PMed me requesting the thread be closed, we don't simply close the threads on this basis. However, as it's what I'm doing anyway, I guess you get your wish.
