Athletics Association Of Ireland got a grant of 350K

Under this it lists "club athletic equipment, sports hall indoor competition, track and field competition, speed gates, dartfish analysis, GPS heart rate monitors and lactate machines"

I wonder if they forgot that you dont need GPS to have a good heart rate monitor? Presumably they are to go with the lactate machines for athlete testing.

Someone probably decided better to be looking at the GPS than looking for it.

Wonder how to go about getting on the tender list ...... ;)

Not sure what your point/question is. Your subject says GPS watches, but you have underlined GPS heart rate monitors.

In any case, are these not worthwhile training tools in your opinion ? Surely a piece of equipment that allows you forensically analyze your training outputs is a worthwhile investment ?

I agree that they are a great tool but should they be paid for out of AAI grant or should they be paid for out of an individual's own grant if they get one ? If they don't get a personal grant then they should have to pay for their own watch. Now there should be 10 fold as many grants as there is now available than there is currently. I am not begrudging anyone as i think it is very little money that anyone of them get. I only wish it was more. I am just saying once an organisations budget is used for individuals training needs when there are already a process in place for that there will be haves and have nots rather than than it be decided on merit which the individual grants do. Put in a gps watch allowance onto the individual grants by all means but it should not come directly from the orgs budget.

If a runner is being coached, their coach might want to see their heart rate data during particular sessions, and the way to do that is to give them a HRM to wear.

Maybe they are not for exclusive individual use, but more for clubs to distribute when needed ?

True didn't think of that but does anyone know of an instance where that has actually happened ?

No. I'd say that is the stated intent of the clubs, but in reality it's probably a case that individuals get to keep them

I'd have thought the aim was HR monitoring of developing athletes.

Something more like the Polar team would be applicable as most AAI events are measured so GPS not needed and definitely not needed for track training. Footpods would be better on track for measuring cadence & stride length.

My own club (Bournemouth AC) have a couple of Garmins given to us by Garmin that have been spread around. They are a couple of years old so it's quite possible that they stick with the same people now (I haven't been training for nearly a year now) however initially they were passed around regularly. Typically though if you're serious enough about your running and you've tried a Garmin you'll go out and get your own so the typical request for one came when somebody had sent their's out for repair.

I'm not 100% sure but I think that he arranged the deal. IIRC the deal is that we have to upload all runs to the Bournemouth Garmin account.
