Whole Candied Peel?

That Delia Smith would sicken you.
She's always going on about how it's best to use 'whole' 'candied' peel in your cake and puddings and to cut it yourself.

In her TV show last year she's there smugly snipping away at it listening to the radio.....saying it's relaxing.

That's all well and good but where are you supposed to buy that? All I can ever find is the Shamrock branded mixed peel stuff that's already chopped.

I don't even like it - I used to always pick it out of the cake when I was younger.

Still I suppose it wouldn't be a Christmas cake without it.

Anyone ever found this in Dublin or elsewhere?

The Gourmet Shop in Rathgar does it, but it seems reasonably easy to make so I think I'll have a go myself.

In fairness the full stuff does taste a lot better than the pre-packed ones. :)

If I'm making my own cake, I don't put something in it that I don't like! :D

    I know....

Actually, I don't even eat that much of the cake.

But it makes Christmas-ey smells and others like it.
And Christmas is about sharing......and the baby Jesus and all that stuff.

But maybe 'whole candied peel' (if it even exists) might change my whole perspective. Who knows.
Hehe, I don't actually eat fruit cakes of any kind, so when I make the Christmas cake/pudding I don't eat any of it. :o

When it's a normal cake though, I makes it the way I likes it! :pac:

So has anyone made their cake yet this year? Can't wait to do mine but it probably be another couple of weeks before I get the time. Must make sure I have whiskey to keep it moist until Christmas. Ran out at one point last year :-)

One could always make their own candied peel. http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/recipes/peel.htm
Labour intensive but i'm sure the end result would be worth it if you are making alot of cakes.

Still eating my cake from last year - let's hear it for decent storage tins, eh? ;)

For non-traditional cake lovers might I suggest Nigella's Chocolate Fruit Cake (page 180 of "Christmas")?
I made it for my mother last year the week before Christmas Week and it went down a storm. Didn't last jigtime as she snaffled it at every opportunity and she's not a sweet-tooth kind of gal.

Made mine last weekend. Pud this weekend. Then mincemeat.
After that see what's left over and maybe a Dundee or something.

No fear of running out of whiskey in my house. Theme for this year's cakes is 'boozy'............

I've 3 cakes made a few weeks ago. I never use mixed peel. I just substitute raisins

ah forget delia. you should start following lazy nigella - you'd never see her snipping whole candied peel - too busy practicing her cringe pouting in the mirror. Just follow her example - buy everything read made, f*ck them into a bowl, small stir with a wooden spoon, flung into the oven, and voila, Christmas is ready.

    :D:D
