Hi, my name is Ciaran. I recently heard that there is an issue concerning Transmen seeking abortions in the UK and being denied services. It was raised at a recent pro-choice rally. I want to know if there's anyone out there who has had this experience? All the organizations I've talked to say they have never heard of it? Is it a matter of Transmen not accessing services or Transmen being denied them? Please comment.

I have never heard of this, I could be wrong, but I'd be very surprised if this had happened even once and I was neither aware or giving out stink. Given the circumstances it would take to be both seeking abortion and identifiable as trans I doubt there is frequent opportunity to deny service on that basis, and given that it would be a story involving pregnant men I find it hard to believe it could happen and not be on the front page of every tabloid.

What I have heard of is increasing recognition that abortion rights are not just women's rights, that there are other people with a uterus out there. Maybe you heard a general inclusive nod towards trans guys at the rally and mistook it for a separate issue?

    Hi Ciaran

Can I just ask are you a journalist?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Yes it may be that this issue has not been raised or that Transmen in general have had little difficulty in that regard. My reaction was the same, that there would be a much larger response in the media. Thanks for your input there. @mango salsa yes I am a writer, my interest was peaked when I heard about this issue.

Okay Ciaran, we do like writers to be open about their intentions here, in future you'll have to contact a mod via PM before starting threads in this manner, just so everyone is aware how their input on this site may be used.

On the subject of the thread itself I'm just going to clarify, just cause you aren't giving the impression you know, accidental pregnancy for trans guys is pretty damn unlikely, as in biologically so, it's not impossible, but it's close, and it's even less likely it would go to term. Pregnant guys you would have seen in the news would have come off testosterone to get pregnant and maintain a pregnancy. Even with pre-T guys, it's just not something I'd expect to see, for a variety of reasons. The scenario you have presented, it's insanely unlikely that it would have happened to an individual, more so that nothing be heard, never mind that it would be a proper thing.

FYI - The forum charter has been modified at number 12.

I don't know much about the issues at all though. Perhaps try and find out who raised the issue and look for more information from them.

Thank- you very much for elucidating the issue. I found it most helpful. Let me allay any preemptive fear I sense allusion to; as a writer I'm curious about many issues and would of course illicit permission for 'use' of any information I glean from research. I was simply exploring a topic I'd been exposed to and will definitely continue to edify myself. I will of course, in future, approach the proper channels with any inquiry that may require expurgating.
    Thanks again.
