Agitation Point Covers

A few lads PM'd me for info on DIY agitation point covers after a post in another thread so I said I'd write up a bit about how we did ours with a few pics.

They were made up about 3yrs ago so steel prices and galvonising might have changed since but I'm sure if it has the manufactured ones are more expensive as well.

The steel used is your standard channel steel for the slats and angle steel for the frame that the slats fit into.

There's a steel rod going across the bottom of one end and this is your basic hinge.
There's no rebar safety frame that I see on a lot of the manufactured ones but the slats sit nicely on the pipe so you can leave the slat down over the pipe and work away.

The channel steel is about 1cm thick. You can see my scrawny finger in one of the pics to give you an idea.

The groves were cut out with a gas torch, everything else done up with an angle grinder and a welder.

Now the cost. The total in materials was 4500 ex VAT. Thats all the steel and the galvonising which was done by a crowd in Limerick, Shannonside Steel or something like that.
That was 14 seperate covers, some slighly different sizes but all around your typical size. So that works out at 320 a piece.
Expensive but I can see them lasting 20 years. We replaced 12 year old ones that were pure crap so I'd say these will pay in the long run.

Nice to see, good pics...i'll need an entire slat making up to do away with the aggro of lifting it every time we need to agitate...who did your work ?

Made them up ourselves. They're simple enough. Nothing clever or complex in the construction.

So did you get a new standard gang slat and cut a steel hole in it for the Agitation Frame?

A neighbour of mine makes the manhole covers for Croom Concrete slats if any one needs one. always has a few in stock ready to go.

The covers all replaced either concrete removable slats or manufactured covers which had rotted.

So it was just a case of popping out the old system and popping in the new. Thats why they varied slightly in sizes.

Out of interest does anyone know what a similar cover would be to buy?
