Strange question about rebuilding old desktop vs new laptop

EDIT: Mods maybe this should be in the building/upgrading section? Please move if you think it more appropriate. Thanks!

Right this may seem like a strange question but here goes.

I'm basically wondering if it was worth my while to rebuild my desktop (not sure what's wrong, possibly just a faulty psu) when we consider my current laptop. My desktop was built in 2008 and was fairly top of the line back then, brief specs as follows:
    • Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz
    • Nvidia Geforce 8800gtx 756mb
    • 6gb memory (fairly high standard at the time but can't for the life of me remember what)
    • Dual raptor 12k RPM Sata raid drives (for the OS and games)
While by today's standards it's fairly dated I'm wondering how much of an improvement it would be over my current laptop in regards to gaming which is:
    • i5 2410 @ 2.3ghz
    • Nvidia geforce 525m
    • 6gb Ram
    • Bog standard sata Hard drive @5400rpm

Any idea's how much of a boost in gaming I would have with my old desktop (if i can manage to bring it back to life). Would it be worth my while to make the effort or should I just start again from scratch?

I was thinking of replacing the PSU for my desktop and then see if that fixes it (but buying a decent PSU incase it doesn't and I need to do a complete overhaul).

Any input/ideas most welcome. I was fairly up to speed back in 2008 hardware wise but that's 4 years ago and I haven't a clue these days. Thanks!

Gameing on Laptops is generally pretty rubbish unless you have spent big big bucks on a gaming laptop.

What makes you think its the PSU that has died?

Well it might also be more than just the psu. I was storing it in the basement of my parents place after I moved abroad and apparently there was a flood. My dad assures me that it was high above the water line and the box it was in had no water damage. When I tried powering it up however it was dead. I tried powering it up using the paper clip test and nothing (so either I messed that up or it is dead).

Was just looking for an easy short term "upgrade" from my laptop till I build a new gaming machine and was wondering if my old desktop with a new psu (if that's all that's wrong) would outperform my laptop (the answer should be a yes after some research) but I think I'll just go for a new build.

    Thanks for your reply :)
