'Clash City Rockers in 'Classic Rock' forum, shock'!!!
IMHO The Clash belong in any list of 'greats'.
    Nice one 'Aquila'.

I think The Clash would be far more suited to the Punk forum than Classic Rock but I won't complain too much since it's nice to see a thread about them.

My fear is that the good people over at the Punk forum would send them back pronto, clutching a hastily written note stating:'not known as this address' superimposed by a large blood-red 'inauthentic' in classic punk stencilling.

    Then where would we be?
Caught in a inter-forum, quasi-diplomatic incident of Julian Assange proportions.
Let's be big-hearted and give them a home.
    What about these for 'classic rock' credentials;
Mick Jones had very long hair in his first couple of bands.
Unfortunately, drummer Topper Headon had for years - by his own admission - been battling Heroin addiction, thankfully he's now clean.
Blue Oyster Cult producer Sandy Pearlman (hardly a spiky-haired malcontent) produced 'Give 'Em Enough Rope.
    Er, will that do?

Or how about the fact that although the Clash appeared on the scene around the same time as punk took off, it doesn't make them a punk band.

I, the band members and most fans considered them Punk, defo not classic rock though, I always think of more conservative music and lyrical content when I hear that phrase.

"White Riot", "Career Opportunities" and "Janie Jones" from the 1st album are definately punk. Could throw in a few more.

The first two whole albums are basically punk rock.

I'd say "Give 'em enough rope" much less so.

Great band, one of my all time favourites but arguing over what is and isn't "punk" is a waste of time.

Always puts me in a good mood:

Sure isn't that what the internet is for? :D

The Clash are bloody brilliant. So hard to pick just one song as a favourite...But if pushed I'd say "Lost in the Supermarket".

I watched a documentary about them last night. Such a pioneering band that always pushed themselves creatively. I'm not one for nostalgia but I wish bands today had half the fire.

These labels/music genres are basically meaningless when it comes to a band like The Clash. Sure, they started out sounding like punk, because punk was in full-flow when they first arrived on the scene, and that was their way-in to the music scene. But they were too good for that limited form, and quickly out-grew it (in the same way The Beatles outgrew Bo Diddley). The Clash, over time, fused punk, reggae, ska, rock'n'roll and numerous other styles you might care to mention. But why waste any more time talking about these styles and labels? Great music is great music after all. Personally I'd rather spend my time getting lost in London Calling, Sandanista, .....and other such classic albums.

All should check out "Live:From Here To Eternity", one of the best live albums I've ever heard.

I've never been into live albums, 101 proof by Pantera being about the only exception I can think of, will give this a listen though.
