Wood Burning stove and only warm rads

    Hi All,

Looking for some advice on what to do with the following situation.
I have a Hunter Herald 14 wood burning stove as well as oil burner heating system.

The stove heats the water no problem until scalding hot. Have a pipe thermostat and pump installed and have changed settings on the thermostat from lowest to highest for testing but can never get the rads anything more than a bit warm. Stove only appears to take the chill out of them. I can put the oil heating on for a few mins after this and they are red hot....

We have tested it a couple of times with large amount coal - you could not stand near the stove it was that hot - and the rads got a bit warmer but nothing like what they should be.

There are 12 rads hanging off this - 5 of them double.
Bungalow house but tank is upstairs - good distance away from the stove (30 - 40 feet maybe between stove and cylinder).

I am wondering now if i need to get a plumber to take a look or contact the stove people?
Or maybe I need to get some kind of independent guy out who can do a survey and give me an idea of what needs to happen?

Is it possible to get a stronger pump maybe?

Also - I noticed the massive Stove sticky thread but this seems to be more of a general pumping setup issue so thought it didnt belong there...

If mods disagree let me know and we can close and I will add to that. :)

open to correction on this, but when researching stoves a couple of years ago, found that this "quoted" radiator is normally a 1200mm single radiator, as you seem to be heating quite a lot more than the "quoted" number of rads (10 is the figure I found online), I think that stove would have its work cut out to warm your rads, never mind getting them piping hot.
Also max output is quoted at 12.5Kw, this would most likely only be achieved using coal, with wood, probably only looking at about 75-80% of this at best.

Can you zone your heating to allow the stove to maybe heat half your rads?
What is the sizing of your rads like and what is the total heat requirement of your house?

Is the pump working OK when the stove is the primary heat source?

Thanks BTB - I will take a closer look at the documentation in relation to size and number of rads. Cannot zone but might turn some off for testing to see if the others get hotter.

Pump seems to be working ok - I heard it kicking in the last time I was up adjusting the termostat.

Set the pipe thermostat to 50 degrees C. Is there any air in the system? Rads been bled?

It could well be that there are too many radiators. There are a few posts on the net of it not heating the rads great. It could well be most likely installer error and didn't work out the Kw output of your rads. Is the boiler the wraparound version or the one with a clip in boiler? The receipt should say.
This would make a big difference as the clip in boiler is rated at 7kw output whereas the integral, factory fitted boiler according to hunter is rated at 12-13.2kw.

Hetas who independantly test stoves tested it at 9.7kw output burning wood. I would say if it is the factory fitted expect no more than 12kw to the rads.

How is the pipework plumbed? Do the pipes on the rear of the stove rise all the time to upstairs? Some pictures would help.

    Stove Fan:)
